#245 Objective Writing Hackfest
Closed: declined by langdon. Opened by langdon.

Purpose:

To allow the people proposing the new ~4 Objectives to:
a) learn from each other about writing objectives. We have a couple people who have done it before and a few who never have.
b) the objectives proposed are all, potentially, closely related and a coordinated set would relieve complexity in communication during the approval process

Outcome

3-5 Objective Proposals covering modularity, CI, packager experience, lifecycle

Location:

Philadelphia, PA

Proposed Dates:

Sun & Mon: March 3, 4
Sun & Mon: March 10, 11
Sun & Mon: March 24, 25

Attendees

Ben Rosser
Paul Frields
Tomas Tomecek
Dominik Perpeet
Petr Sabata
Neal Gompa
Langdon White
Ben Cotton
Matthew Miller
Igor Gnatenko

Some of these people are optional but they would need to decide for themselves.

Estimated budget

$15,000

Can you share the breakdown of the budget? I am not able to add it up to that figure.

Break down how? I used $6,700 in airfare (back of the napkin on quick searches on kayak for where I knew people are to philly) and $7820 for food/hotel which was like $150 a night in hotel + $75 a day in food. However, I have no idea if that is a good estimate. Do we have guidance on this somewhere?

I'm +1 to the general idea. Flights are looking pretty cheap from Boston — let's firm up the dates soon. (I'll make either of the proposed times work.)

Do we have a specific hotel in mind?

just fyi, I used acela from boston and virginia not planes for the estimate.

bex is looking in to this

@langdon I'd like this hackfest's deliverables to include a reusable Objective proposal template and documentation for future Objective proposals, to be published on docs.fedoraproject.org. This way we're capturing the results of the first half of the purpose for future efforts.

@bcotton That makes sense. I can take that on as my personal deliverable for the hackfest, since I'm not working on any specific objective.

Hey, I'm sorry for not commenting here sooner-- I was trying to get a sense of my schedule over the coming month.

I think I'm pretty likely to be unavailable March 24th/25th. The other dates should be possible though!

If that is the best time for others, that's okay-- I might still be able to join remotely.

Just to clarify / repeat what I said during the last meeting, I'll try to attend remotely, no matter which day.

To all the potential attendees: Why would this hackfest be useful for you? What are you expecting to gain from it?

For me, there's two things. First, having focused time set aside to work on this will be good — it's been on my backlog for a long time. And that doesn't just go for me: we've got a number of objectives in limbo right now really needing a write-up. That doesn't need to be at an in-person hackfest, but, this leads to the second thing: writing the overall docs for how to do something while working with people doing that thing is hard to beat. Having everyone together talking about how to best structure these documents, what information to present, how to present it, etc, will really help create a great template and great what/why/how documentation for objectives in general.

Also, for what it's worth, I can guarantee that I'll be available to help talk about what I want to see in objectives, and hopefully that'll be helpful to people!

Aside from benefiting from face-to-face conversation with people about this topic, I think it's the best and fastest way to get us a coherent policy for developing Objectives in the same way we do for Changes (and previously Features).

It also may help us on figuring out how to deal with somewhat similar Objectives and how to merge them and implement how to decide on acceptance criteria for Objectives (which we don't seem to have now).

As to the question about dates: I had previously opened up my entire next week for a hackfest that has seemingly imploded, so if this used some of those days, that would work out quite nicely.

During the council meeting on Feb 27, it was determined that this hackfest should not be pursued. Closing the ticket.
