Problem #1: we don't have a great source of individually-purchasable Fedora swag. Unixstickers.com only has the Fedora F as part of a $24 "Elite pack". Red Hat's "Cool Stuff Store" doesn't have anything anymore (and has a variety of problems). And HelloTux has some really nice shirts but just shirts.
Problem #2: To fill this void, many people have created designs on popular print-on-demand platform Redbubble. Unfortunately, most of these designs are awful. Just, really, really bad. And they're not approved.
Ben, as Fedora Legal liaison, is going to address the unauthorized items in #2, but we'll still have the unfilled void. So, I'm proposing that I set up a Redbubble store that is officially approved. This will include designs approved by the Design Team for specific items. We won't just put everything on all things in all sizes, because not everything really works. (I personally am excited about metal prints with some of my favorite wallpaper designs.)
This way, people will be able to get the swag they're clearly wanting, without resorting to unauthorized uploads.
Redbubble isn't really set up for organizations. And, Fedora isn't necessarily set up well that way too. Therefore, I'm proposing that I set this up myself, either under mattdm or under Fedora Project. I'm asking for official Fedora trademark permission to do so. I will set everything at cost, which both makes everything as accessible as possible and makes it so I don't have to deal with income.
mattdm
Fedora Project
(Also, taking input on whether anyone has any preference for me using my personal name vs. a Fedora Project account.)
+1 to the trademark
About your personal vs FP account, I prefer the FP account, because as much as we love you, you won't be FPL forever.
+1 to trademark usage
+1 to Eduard's acknowledgement of your mortality

LOL sobering yet fair.
I am +1 to my own proposal btw. :)
Also, if something ever happens to me, for the record: I'm using my Fedora Project mattdm email address for the account, and that can be used to reset the password if that llama farm lottery dream ever does come to fruition.

Oh no!

I am OK with you doing this since you can officially represent both Fedora and Red Hat through your role. For something like this, I think that is helpful. But it only counts if you write it down somewhere! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Perhaps a "Responsibilities" sub-header on your bio page?

Marie let me know that she has some concerns she'd like to figure out before going ahead, but also would like to be on holiday vacation. And, despite my excitement, this is not actually on fire, so I'll wait for the holidays to go ahead before getting too far.
I think it is good to get Redbubble sorted so you can cover the issues with people using that site unofficially. There are other vendors as well that might be worth considering such as Spreadshirt and Teespring.
I'd also like to recommend the DLN Store as we would like to make custom products related to Fedora, with permission of course. Just a thought. :D
I believe there is also an fpl@ alias for you that would be an even better fit.

Hi @michaeltunnell! Are you in a position to represent the DLN Store? If so, you could submit a trademark request to the Council for approval to use the Fedora trademark. We could discuss the details of how that might work in a new ticket.
Also a friendly reminder that we are getting into the year-end, so expect feedback to be slow until January.

That alias gets so much spam that I'm not sure it's fit for anything. :(

Yes, I do represent the DLN Store in an official manner and I have created a new trademark request as mentioned.
Hey folks!
As @mattdm mentioned, I have a few concerns with setting up a RedBubble. There are a few that I would like to highlight here. @mattdm and I discussed these things prior to this post.
Accessibility. Redbubble has some really cool items, but most things will cost upwards of $40 with shipping included. Although some of us are fortunate to have that kind of disposable income, a lot of us are not. So the question becomes, who is this benefiting and is the value it provides to that group of people worth the limited time & energy we have to provide.
Overlap. My job as FCAIC includes handling swag solutions for the Fedora Project. I currently juggle enough wrt swag, especially now that we are all virtual for the time being. I am actually working on a solution with OSPO (Open source program office) that would allow us to send shipments and to generate coupon codes for contributors to cash in. Unfortunately, these things take time to set up in a corporate setting. Please be patient, and I will continue to send swag as I have been for now :)
Cost & practicality. If we theoretically set up a Fedora Redbubble it wouldn't be affordable as a swag solution, as one-offs or if we ordered in bulk and distributed ourselves. The swag that we currently buy is in bulk through manufacturers and we get items at a very low cost this way so as to make it affordable. Also, we aren't in the business of running merch shops.
All that being said, @mattdm is a Fedora fan! And I will not oppose him running this as a personal endeavor.
Yeah, I'm not proposing running this as our Official Swag Solution — I see it as an extra we can make available, and as a stop-gap so people quit making unauthorized things.
On the equity issue, one idea I had was to have a markup and use that to help fund general swag. But then I'd have to deal with money, which goes against a lot of the other points. My current idea is to say somewhere in the redbubble page: "Hey, Fedora fans — Redbubble is a relatively high-priced way to get cool Fedora stuff. If you've got the money for this, awesome, and please also help out by donating extra for Flock to Fedora to help sponsor getting all the Fedora folks we can together (when we can get people together again)." (Flock, because as far as I know, that's the only point where we ask people for money.)
Matthew withdrew the request.
