#85 Fedora Modular Server: Fancy Name = Boltron
Closed: approved Opened by langdon.

The Server WG felt that we needed a fancy name for the new Fedora Modular Server Preview to generate interest and to try to describe the "thing". During the most recent meeting, the name proposed and agreed to was "Fedora Boltron" attempting to:

  • have a bit of humor
  • reference to Voltron where the "sum was greater than the parts"
  • "bolted together" == disparate pieces tightly attached but separate

We are asking for the Council to weigh in on the name. The Modularity WG will review the name at their next meeting as well.

I think this is fine (and serves all three of your goals) for the prototype. It is significantly better than Fedora Crazy Server.

It would take a groundswell of popular and media enthusiasm for the name to convince me that this is a better name for Fedora Server overall, assuming success.

How do you envision it being used? 'Fedora Server Boltron'?

I think associating the Fedora Server brand is important.

Can we also run it past Marketing?

With my Eng hat on: is RCM on board with doing another Edition, one which is significantly different in compose structure than everything else? Does this Edition block the release? (I think no?)

With my Council hat on: Boltron is fine, but I do echo Matt and Bex in that tying it to the Server brand is good.

@bex & @jwboyer I think we had presumed "Fedora Boltron" similar to an edition but "Fedora Boltron Server" might work (prefer that to @bex's suggestion). We should definitely run it by marketing but "how?". Open a ticket somewhere?

@jwboyer I believe that yes they RCM (et al) is expecting to be doing a new "edition" (no updates, preview state, etc). However, I am awaiting their confirmation via Sys-Wide Change.

@mattdm I am not sure the proposal is in any way meant to be a proposal for a name change to the Server Edition just the thing that will be next to it while we experiment.

/me still sad no one liked crazy server

I like "Fedora Server Boltron" but eh.

I'd open a ticket in their pagure/trac and get it in a meeting.

Name order is fine with me either way.

So, this is now an accepted change. Do we want to wait for marketing? I'm inclined to say:

+1 to name from a Fedora trademark perspective, assuming no Marketing objections or vastly better ideas.

Let's do this by lazy consensus; since there aren't any objections in the past three weeks that this has been open, let's see if we can get two more +1s (and no -1s) by the end of the week (that is, Feb 10th).

Did this ever get opened for marketing to consider?

Well, there really hasn't been a functioning Marketing group for many months, outside of Magazine. We should tackle that as a separate issue — but I think as part of our overall strategy and as part of whatever we come up with as "FOSCo".

My understanding from bkp and jflory is that they have been regularly meeting, albeit with sparse attendance.

*reads meeting logs* Yes, sorry for the oversight. Thanks especially to Brian, and also Justin and to the others who have showed up at various meetings.

So, uh, we're doing this. So, I'm gonna go ahead and call it approved. :)
