#13 Various notes for 2018 update
Closed Opened by pbokoc.

General:

  • fix markup - non-link getfedora.org in making media, GNOME 3 due to preceding {nbsp} in ch.2, ... (not visible in print, only in adoc)
  • needs a grammar check, there are some typos and bad articles in various places
  • maybe better screenshots? (bigger, more contrast for print)
  • maybe have a ToC in adoc? (actually this should solve itself if we convert this for Antora - see below)

Specific content notes:

  • making media: more emphasis on FMW, include a screenshot, ignore GNOME Disks, maybe ignore DVDs completely
  • Booting - maybe mention that you'll see the boot menu when you boot
  • Trying the system - mention that you can get the installer from Activities
  • the partitioning section should maybe mention built-in help, and give a short overview about how to make dualboot happen
  • Installing Fedora:
    • point 3, explain what GNOME Shell is ("that's the desktop environment you're seeing!")
    • point 4, how do I get to the installer? (maybe explain in pt. 3)
    • point 5, we're now locking root on Workstation, aren't we?
  • when introducing GNOME, mention it's customizable and xref to "How to Tweak"
  • Installing additional software - maybe talk about dnfdragora instead of yumex?
  • editions need updating

Print verison:

  • when making the print PDF we should try to chunk that better so figures are on the same pair of pages that talks about them and so - ideally - in a list a list item would be on a single page
  • is there a way to reference figures in text (e.g. "see fig. 8")?
  • cover is off-center just slightly and always a bit differently, I'm not sure if that's on purpose
  • English version uses Czech paragraphs (definitely not correct) and it does that inconsistently: Introduction has no tab at the start of the paragraph, What Is It has tabs but no empty lines, How To Get Fedora has both, Getting Oriented has no empty lines again (I guess? The list at the 1st page looks strange),
  • there are double spaces separating sentences (might be correct in English?)

Online version:

  • I'll publish it on the site, but it needs conversion for Antora 1st. See issue #10
  • how do we build previews? Do we make people use docker? (It's needed for Antora right now because it's not packaged for Fedora). If we don't want to do that then we'll need to maintain two mainfiles, one for Antora and one for asciidoctor with includes for each chapter.
  • README will need updating, esp. build instructions after Antora conversion. Also asciidoctor-pdf is gone.

Hi, I tried to accommodate most of the problems and suggestions with the today's commit to master.

Alright, I've finally had time to go through your edits @eischmann. I can confirm pretty much everything I mentioned here has been implemented; I found a couple mostly small issues (the worst one was a bad link to flathub and a missing image) and I fixed them in PR#15.

2018 version has been released with the suggested changes included, closing the ticket.
