issue to track progress on F32 wallpaper
@mizmo, see attached... just played around for a few minutes with another drawing. Just the start of an idea, but I could see it going some where with some filter expertise :) <img alt="fedora_wallpaper.xcf" src="/design/issue/raw/files/a20f52f8ddb1d28524fa44362c035d6cb8df799b1e68015a3d8c5a6d81e36ba6-fedora_wallpaper.xcf" />
Also adding a thing for consideration.

Here's another potential thing I've been working on (something I'm calling the 'weird pots' series). Here's a couple of them. I'll note they seem 'weird' for Fedora, but I present them nonetheless.
<img alt="weird-pots.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/d5c7c1a19cbd54144a82ce30a9fe49dac0802294773dbf82f434d111bf9d4a3c-weird-pots.png" />

Two more from weird pots:

@kylerconway i love love love that halftone texture in the blend files.
@duffy -- Yeah, I did too. It was a G'MIC plugin I used in GIMP after rendering the blender file. I'm worried it's a little dark for Fedora, but I'm using it as my background now happily.
We could also pull back a bit and more center the weird element on the page.
<img alt="f32-middle.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/2ab779029e360f6fb0ab13894c90fcbbaee71bc787aea6fce350ead10f8206a5-f32-middle.png" />
@kylerconway I liked how close it was in the initial one, but maybe the angling could be different? I am going to try to take a look at the blend today, but if I don't get a chance in the meantime - I was thinking the same closeness as the first render but the box in the lower left corner with the extrusions coming out and going up and to the right... does that make sense? I think having a strong diagonal has worked pretty well in past wallpapers.
<img alt="1.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/ff628f1eb8ba0e2375d404dda5d2f00185689a3f03889c85fd327a8f811ad7ec-1.png" /> <img alt="6040613ebbac468ebe940c147d3f589201a0de05bb270d1e5add9a28aa412c50-play-blend.xcf" src="/design/issue/raw/files/1edf0952ecbe366a3093b8d4a9cf28d84e3a59db4df328001da182f26df914b6-6040613ebbac468ebe940c147d3f589201a0de05bb270d1e5add9a28aa412c50-play-blend.xcf" />
@duffy -- Looks great! I'm glad you lightened and colorized the black background as I was worried about that! I have a render exporting right now so I'll upload that once finished and we'll have two slightly different views -- but I like it!
This is the same as the last one but the background has more halftone cowbell ;-) <img alt="2.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/bc60c56628c39b8355632e83095bc722386cd587d82233c9adf9050fb7042623-2.png" /> <img alt="6040613ebbac468ebe940c147d3f589201a0de05bb270d1e5add9a28aa412c50-play-blend.xcf" src="/design/issue/raw/files/09c15c4fa8da30d18aed7c6028d2f8937f442a0abe77d59041c127760e0e018f-6040613ebbac468ebe940c147d3f589201a0de05bb270d1e5add9a28aa412c50-play-blend.xcf" />
So much cowbell on the second one! (I kinda like the cleaner background myself).
Here's my recent render.
<img alt="f32-left-corner.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/d281f3be6f093d1825b7ab5ee990a416a431d599aa5bec33dd2047351679895a-f32-left-corner.png" />
I need to make the halftone-elements bigger on the 4k render!
Updated with bigger halftone-elements.
<img alt="f32-left-corner-02.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/d012ff8c20b2d6851c03047c08bc6a6652fb30a2bc066384b7349bd2b4555f05-f32-left-corner-02.png" />
I love that angle! It reminds me of the final fantasy 7 meteor logo, lol.
I liked the gritty feel the halftone of the other angle had. I'm wondering how to achieve it here. <img alt="d281f3be6f093d1825b7ab5ee990a416a431d599aa5bec33dd2047351679895a-f32-left-corner.xcf" src="/design/issue/raw/files/19a6f731f76d5b685d00982bb5a24780388a62c05c199d447c7f493c0c69d7a3-d281f3be6f093d1825b7ab5ee990a416a431d599aa5bec33dd2047351679895a-f32-left-corner.xcf" />

Here's two attempts to re-grit. Honestly I like any angle on these so I'm open to anything. The problem/beauty of 3D being that we can do any angle at all with relative ease -- it's the halftone that's the problem!
<img alt="f32-left-corner-grit-02.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/509145f85a1668426f0c0fa35520aab38e977499f3bdb1cc557d0b0f67faaa8e-f32-left-corner-grit-02.png" />

Different angle (for fun).
<img alt="f32-on-02.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/5b452508b49e5fc9c03e00a69488d8bbcc0bca0c79b06a3bf7512aef12fdee04-f32-on-02.png" />
Is this too weird?
<img alt="4.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/e0baa416a0b18dada1e5cadfccd3ae6ce058131f722ffc4f3d2d262f8d441f20-4.png" />
The grit 01 has the perfect background but the colors in the object are less exciting, 02 has more excitement but the grit is kinda too sharp. I did a blur overlay here, it boosts the colors even more and softens the grit, but maybe it's too soft overeall.
I love the other angle; it feels very cinematic. I think filling the frame a bit more works better for wallpapers though so your focus is more diffuse looking at it - does that make sense?
I don't think it's weird. To give more options for control here I changed the shader node to emission in blender for the box element and re-rendered to create a clean layer mask we could use to get the background from #1's grit to apply to your updated vibrant coloring. This should give us more options to texture and color in GIMP.
<img alt="f32-grit-mask.xcf" src="/design/issue/raw/files/a57f60a375bd396f6641c898b59fbb5e374c0bb9dfc38ce76a2ace2abb2d1843-f32-grit-mask.xcf" />
I have a strong preference for a lighter, brighter, more cyan blue (although maybe with a darker tone secondary option, or as part of the day-cycle wallpaper feature GNOME has). Like the F26 wallpaper I loved so much. :)
Also, since this is a background, I think it's nice for there to be relatively low contrast overall -- an object that really stands out from the background seems too stark to me.
Is there a significance to the heights of the various bars? Could we retro-fit them with one? That was another nice thing about F26.
Also, I like the halftone pattern.
Here's some lighter, cyan versions (quick mock-ups via GIMP). No particular significance to the height of the bars -- not sure what meaning they might be able to have appended to them. My one thought from the brief conversation was a weak, visual play on Erving Goffman's "Frame Analysis" -- but it's weak.

Maybe we could get data from Badges about user involvement and adjust the heights to those? It'd be cool to have an easter-egg tie-in to community.
It will be nice to take account of some users as noticed on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1702174
I know I'll sound like a broken record, but I'd like to propose to form a set of geometric elements or a style "glue" for the wallpaper release to release. Starting each design process er release from ground up is giving up using the wallpaper as a clear visual branding tool.
There is very little continuity to the Fedora wallpapers.
I like the color scheme and the texture will help with color banding on lower quality displays.
@jimmac i would like to see us get to that point but we need to get through the rebranding first i think. we're changing up the process moving forward to have the artwork ready a lot further ahead of time.
I had a free hour this evening so threw something together also based Erving Goffman's Frame Analysis.

@luya I never saw that go by, that's interesting. Are you able to package one of these ideas for beta so we have something?
@mciahdenn I love how it is able to incorporate all the fedora colors without being too busy. I think this is a great starting point for F33 which we also have to get done now. Can you post the .blends ?
@kylerconway I think i like the last one the best, with one caveat - if I download it and set it as the desktop bg in gnome, it's way too bright and super saturated. but if I view it in eog and full screen it, it's not saturated it's just perfect. so i think it's something to do with the color profile. i'm playing around with it to see if i can get it to work properly as a gnome background. i think it strikes a nice balance with a cool texture, i think it's light enough for @mattdm 's preferences :) and it's not harsh on the eyes. and maybe for final we could poke around the heights of the extrusions to map to some fedora-related data.
I modified this to desaturate it so it'd display well as a gnome background, and embedded the color profile - can anybody test it? <img alt="5.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/67ee07043adb0c9933dfd62fb02d54dee00797517a2523833d56275f1fc87c09-5.png" />
@duffy I will this evening.
@luya awesome, thank you!!!
I personally mourn the loss of a variety of colors, but accept that there's a preference for brightness.
I'm not sure if there's still time for discussion/thoughts, but I re-rendered the blender file with a cyan emission shader in the background, and then exported to GIMP for halftone effect. Just more food for thought.
<img alt="f32-cyan-rerender.jpg" src="/design/issue/raw/files/95c85768da549873014f92f885acbeef564154a936624e11a5fa2263fdd591cb-f32-cyan-rerender.jpg" />

Here's one more re-render where I added a cyan light source in the foreground to lessen the variability of the colors, but still keep it present.

I really am fine with what everyone thinks is best here though -- especially given the timelines.
@duffy - Your de-saturated version of the cyan modification is notably less-distracting as a background though (I've swapped out throughout the day) -- so that may be the way to go.
You're very welcome.
@duffy @mattdm @kylerconway @riecatnor The package is submitted for review. A new change in the process is dropping the "standard,normalish,wide,tv-wide" folders in favour of system wide resolution setting (default to zoom) thus drastically saving the size of package.
See also https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds/releases
@duffy I like your edit but it's still too saturated for me. Here's an attempt to match it closer to the colours of the f31 wallpaper.
<img alt="f32.001.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/29d027118c97120b584a6beb3fcca99a1cc9bfb1f817f87f345d6cdb130588ff-f32.001.png" />
Hey we need a final, and I need something tomorrow so we have it ready for Summit. How do you like this for final? I was trying to keep it brighter rather than darker, but not pure cyan because that can be too bright or distracting depending on display - and also tried to maintain the colors as well as the cool texture
@mciahdenn @kylerconway @luya @mattdm @riecatnor <img alt="f32.002.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/5a0843b4cc6d478523fe14c00a86be1b90635613d06800a1759126d297a39773-f32.002.png" />
I like it!
+!, it looks sweet!
Here's the other 3 for the time of day. @luya can you update the package? <img alt="f32.002_twilight.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/4cbb03343399bf8d1a88c88c00b5a66bab450ccb68cfbf9014d76894e09b05f0-f32.002_twilight.png" /><img alt="f32.002_dusk.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/1d2f82eba075e7413f66775f325ad6ec8f84fdbcdd072eb9dc638f4543294043-f32.002_dusk.png" /><img alt="f32.002_dawn.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/866afe886c722d7cf5ca87ac19eba205aabca14829c932287c7c33206603b462-f32.002_dawn.png" />
Here's the other 3 for the time of day. @luya can you update the package?
@duffy Sorry for the late reply as I was busy. I will do this week.
@duffy #@mattdm @riecatnor @kylerconway @mciahdenn The package is updated with enabled animated default wallpaper: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2020-97bd7c2cd2
So FWIW, though the phrasing was awful, I do share some of the concerns discussed in a recent devel@ thread.
It seems like the more contrast and color there is, the more visible the "noise" effect in the halftoning is, to the point where it's really distracting to me in the final versions. It doesn't look too bad in thumbnails but it kinda does as a full-size background, and when you look at the images full scale. Also, the way that one light source in among the bars shows as quite aggressively pink in the "day" / static default version - which is the version everyone is actually going to see all the time as things stand, because the animated version isn't installed by default (and only works on GNOME anyway) - looks very odd to me.
We did slip the release a week - would it be at all possible to tweak these over the weekend to minimize these issues? I do prefer @mciahdenn 's version, for instance...
:heavy_plus_sign: :100: to what @adamwill said. The noise effect feels very disturbing when on full screen. @mciahdenn 's version makes that less of a problem.
@adamwill thx for bringing to my attention... i dont follow devel anymore for my mental health 😳 ill try to make some adjustments this wkend
@duffy You can upload the changes in the master repository. Let me know when done so I can build the package.
I've decided upon review of the feedback and playing around with alternate ways of displaying it, it's best to leave them be. Sorry. I'll take the fall if that ends up being the wrong call.
(Also note I have been using it as my wallpaper since they were created and haven't experienced any issues.)
