#701 Fedora 33 Release Party Poster
Closed: Fixed 4 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 4 years ago by duffy.

Fedora 33 is coming out soon so it would be good to have a release party poster designed for it.

You can see some previous release party posters and other graphics here:
https://pagure.io/design/issues?search_pattern=release+party&status=all

The Fedora 33 artwork is here, and you could use it in your design if you wanted:

As the Fedora release party poster is already released, I'd like to design the Fedora 33 release party poster.

@ayesha07 It's all yours, good luck! I'm looking forward to see what you come up wtih :)

Thanks, @duffy :) I'll do my best.

Here is info for the Release Party

November 6th, 7th, and 8th
Registration link (I will provide this later, use "www.registrationlink.com" for now)
Event sign up page link: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F33_Virtual_Release_Party_Event_Signup#F33_Release_Party_Social_Events

I think we can pull the theme from the events we are doing at the release party. One is Halloween Party and one is war of the wizards(kinda like dnd). Check out the wiki link to learn more, and you are also welcome to sign up!

I am interested in this? can I do the same task?

@saralatif , As @ayesha07 is currently working on it, You can collaborate with them, provide review and feedback :)

Can I use the already designed background for the poster from any online platform? or I have to design it from scratch?

Can I use the already designed background for the poster from any online platform? or I have to design it from scratch?

Hey @ayesha07! If you designed the background, then sure. However, if you're using a background from an online platform that you did not make, make sure that the design element is under the creative commons license so that it is free to use for all. Otherwise, it is always better to err on the side of caution. If you don't know whether the design is free to use or not, make one from scratch instead of using it :)
(I might have named the license incorrectly or used a wrong term here, @duffy is a better person to talk about this).
Hope this helps!

Thanks, @smeragoel yes incase I choose any background from an online platform I'll definitely check the license.

This is so pretty , you both did a great job, I love it

Thank you @preshy21 _

@ayesha07 @joyskye9

Well done guys! It'll be nice if you can upload the SVG files as well. That way, others can easily make edits on the design.
Personally, I'll like to play around with the colors and layout, if you don't mind :)

Hi everyone! I am excited there is so much activity on this task :)

Now that a couple people have made a few attempts, let me give some feedback on the designs and a couple points about designing for Fedora.

Checking licenses on graphics/photos/etc of any kind is the first step. You can learn more about creative common licenses and how they work here: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/
As @smeragoel said, if unsure, it is best to use caution and create a design of your own.

Please provide your mockups and a source file when you upload. This is really helpful for a lot of reasons, most importantly we can use those designs and remix them for years to come :) It is also helpful for the design team to assist in mentoring and helping new designers on the team.

@ayesha07 that is a good palette to use. Your first draft is cute! As we are discussing the source of graphics, I am curious, did you create all of the elements in the designs yourself or source them from other places? A few points to help improve the design:
- All the elements but the text are blending together. Try creating contrast. Keep the background dark and lighten up the bats/spiders or give them a light outline.
- I love the spiderweb idea! To help align with the Fedora aesthetic a bit more, try simplifying by removing some of the lines in the web. Here is an example: https://previews.123rf.com/images/arcady31/arcady311710/arcady31171000005/87354051-spider-web-black-silhouette-icon.jpg
- Keep an eye on the kerning of the text. Some of the letters are touching each other. Learn more about kerning here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerning#:~:text=In%20typography%2C%20kerning%20is%20the,over%20a%20range%20of%20characters.
- What typefaces are you using?

@joyskye9 these are giving me total MMO game vibes :P they look cool, though I don't feel they fit in with the Fedora aesthetic. You can check out previous release party poster requests at the following links.

It is also important to determine the license of the graphics you sourced.

Thank you @riecatnor for the feedback. I designed these graphics in illustrator (spiders, web, bat, spooky eyes)
and the background is taken from this link https://pagure.io/design/issue/687#comment-693280 @duffy shared this artwork link and I made changes to this according to my design by applying a dark shade for night mode look.
I'm using Montserrat font.
I'll work on kerning, contrast, and spider web and will upload the SVG file here.

@viv Thank you :) I'm working on some changes in design and after doing that I'll share the SVG file here.

@viv
Thanks so much for the compliment. I'll send the SVG file once I'm done.
I'm still working on it based on the previous release party poster I
reviewed.

Here's another one @riecatnor while working on the previous feedback I designed this one :) I'm really enjoying and learning new things. I'll share the previous poster with changes soon.

@riecatnor I did these ones with Inkscape. Please how do you see them? Do they meet up with Fedora aesthetic like you noted earlier? These are the png version, I'll send the svg version right away

Fedora_Poster.jpg

Hello @riecatnor! I edited this poster according to your feedback. Font used for (Release Party & 33) is Montserrat and for the other text Open sans. I've designed every design element in the poster, so there's no issue with the license.

Honest? Not really an improvement. There are plenty of articles for poster design out in the web.
Important are two things. The eye catcher, or visual key or whatever they call it. So what is it, looks like the 33, so give it more space and make it really stand out. You want peoples attention, so grab it! think a bit about glowing eyes somewhere on the poster and if they not re-direct attention, or why must there be a bat with a green border or a second spider.
Second important thing contrast. This green might be spooky but its not comparable in contrast to the white before. If you want make it bit more spooky, then give it a green glow in the background.
Where you on the right way is the information, you dont overfill it but think logic is it necessary to write Date: before 6th November or do you think people would recognize this by themself as a date :)

as you can see, bat and other spooky elements just in the background, the dont drag that much attention that way and as they are black, they help with the contrast. The 33 pops that way in everybodies eye and gets the attention, with a little bit more work and time it even can be better.

Hope it helps

@gnokii
I really appreciate your observations and correction on my design logo and font. Please are there other adjustments I should make on the design to improve it. I'm working on it now. Please help me

How shall I say, learn walk before start to run.
There are so many issues with your "design" that I dont know where to start. There issues with the design itself (see comments on other design, same here internet is full of guides for poster design, just learn what 5W are and what and eyecatcher is) In your case I also suggest to learn a bit about color theming, I dont know where the ugly blue comes from but surly not from the same palette as the pink (which is more Fedora, so if you go for Fedora colors then please the blue to). Well another topic for you to read would be typography. It's fine to use another font, when it is on purpose. But what purpose is there not use Montserrat for all information? And why on earth is there a script font used for "Release Party" whats the purpose? Not to mention, that you have no idea how to deal with such a font :D Just see the pic
And there are many issues with the usage of the tool which might be Inkscape like "do I have to draw a hexagon with bezier curves or why I not use the polygon tool for it" Well that way the hexagons would at least become symetrical :D

Hello @gnokii! Thank you for your feedback I totally agree with the points you highlighted, actually I was trying to give it a Halloween look using bat and spider but highlighting them with a green stroke is not a good idea I'll try to improve this design just the way you guided me. This time I'll focus on the center of attention for the poster. Yes logically using 'date' is not necessary, I've seen many designs in which they write 'date' before mentioning the date.

made you a rough work, to show what I mean
Zeichnung.png

I'm loving this 33 look :) Thank you for this draft. This will help a lot.

it's not the Hallloween look what is the problem. Look at spider and 33 they compete in attraction. Well if you decide the spider shall be my "eye catcher" then so it is, but then it must be a really eycatching one.
Bat, spider all fine but compare mine with yours, they all went to the background. On mine is even more creepy stuff. But it doesnt steal the information the show.

Play a bit with the spider web and assymmetry, you can actually use this web to direct the eye to the eye catcher. I see you already use a radial gradient, there is more in. Dont forget to think on contrast purple orange, can work but not must work, just take a look to "registrationlink" there contrast is nearly gone. A poster hangs normally somewhere in public space and competes with a lot of other "information" so grab the eye, and send the information must be achieved in very short time a good contrast helps there a lot.

I made you another rough one more oriented on what you have now. Hope helps

I'll do my best to implement every corrections you've made on the design. Will improve and make a better one.

@gnokii
I've made some adjustments to the project, I chose my colors from the color palette, the fonts are Montserrat and the "Release Party" too. The hexagon date format is changed to a written format. Please what's your feedback on the design now. I added some design to improve the eye-catch
FEDORA_001.png

FEDORA_002.png

You might want to review the brand guidelines. There are a few issues with the logos and texts too - they are a little deformed from being stretched out of their aspect ratio. Can you fix that? Both the Fedora logo now also the Inkscape one are stretched out of proportion.

As per the logo usage guidelines, the Montserrat-written "Fedora" logo is probably not a good idea and should be replaced with the Fedora wordmark.

I understand you added some elements to improve on how the design catches the eye but I think simple is best and there are too many elements / too much business now. More shadows, more glowing objects, etc can overwhelm the viewer.

I recommend taking a look at https://www.designhill.com/design-blog/tips-for-a-creative-poster-design/ have also a look to the examples, and compare both the balance of the number of elements in the designs as well as the proportional usage of fonts and logos.

@gnokii @riecatnor
For the Halloween party poster, I was thinking we should remix the You Can Pry It From My Cold, Undead Hands badge. I whipped up a quick design. I used the Fedora 33 artwork as a background and the Fedora 27 poster background style. I'm hoping this fits the Fedora aesthetic.

The design is in no way complete yet, but I think it's a good start. @ayesha07 Feel free to use these as inspiration, or remix it. I've attached the SVG files, in case you want to edit it or grab some elements from it. I'll like to hear what @gnokii and @riecatnor think of the idea first :)

They are nice, just two things. First I dont know if a gravestone so prominent with RIP on it is for the purpose a good idea. Second just do the following, show the picture on your screen and step back from it 2 or 3 meters and judge if the hands are still good visible

Hi @viv This is looking nice :) . Thank you for sharing .svg

@viv Wow! I love your design. It's so nice. Kudos!

@ayesha07 why you changed your concept? Never do just because some said someone else has done a nice one. Your old idea wasnt bad at all. Now we start at zero again :(

Seems you have bit trouble create a nice font. Isnt necessary use a ready one:

https://www.dafont.com/shlop.font?l[]=10&l[]=1&text=33

its a free one, so no trouble. Before you add more drips or something like this, work on the impact it has. I show you: I just changed one color a green to yellow and the glowing becomes better and I changed the background from a green glow to a blue one. You can already see on the drips down the highlight, thats what you do then next. That is where the work is in. (Btw dont go for this green, green sucks on printing)

I said it before CONTRAST, so blue one blue? :) The best is you use the complementary colors for your background. You can use https://color.adobe.com/de/create/color-wheel for figure them out.

You still have this beginners problem, to make something very special and show that you are creative, adding contours that bring nothing and add glowing eyes which just distract from the important thing. You really only have to learn, to put creativity in the background and how to put the scary elements.

Hi everyone! Lot's of great drafts on the ticket, I see improvement too :) I am going to choose a poster on Monday or Tuesday, make any small changes I need and add in the links etc. Please submit any last efforts by Monday. @gnokii feedback is guiding in the right direction. Thank you everyone for your work on this task!

p.s. I would still love to see a wizard related design!

@gnokii I didn't use @viv design just because you said it's nice, yes he has done a good job but I thought that we can use each other's design and add and subtract elements to come up with a final one. You're right I'll continue with my design and learn more about using elements and making them prominent where needed.
This time I used "green fuz" font from dafont and added this dripping effect. Thank you for the new font link :)
Yes, I used green also in 33 just for my A/B testing but that was not looking good. I'll work on contrast.
what is the poster size you're using?

@ayesha07 please please be nice to me, when you quote remove picture :( Takes longer and longer to load and costs me pure money

green fuz is a bit to small better stick with Shlop, its btw derived from Bebas Neue a good striking/bold font. A font I would choose to create my drippy font or BorisBlackBoxx a font even more fat.
As said be careful with green, a lot green tones are out of print range. The poster with the green 33 might look here on screen amazing but printed it will loose a lot, except a spot color is used for it.

@riecatnor should have told the size, but you can work on an A4 and scale that later on up, doing a letter based design from it isnt that hard.

@ayesha07 @gnokii we aren't printing this, it will go on various social media platforms. The aspect ratio is fine as is, and I can adjust slightly if needed :)

well then the freaking green can be used. @ayesha07 attach you my green values, depending on the bg color the glow in background must be changed

I've worked on a new concept but I'm perplexed if it'll fit the Fedora aesthetic. My background is from Artwork_FC7Themes_Fc7ThemeProposalFedoraBorealis_fc7themeproposal-fedoraborealis-clifftop-wallpaper
@gnokii Please, am I to work on a particular concept that's related to a bat?

I would also like to get your feedback on this new one I did?

Hi @gnokii @riecatnor, Here's my new attempt on Fedora poster design according to @gnokii guidelines. I hope this time this one is meeting the poster requirement :) waiting for the feedback.

@gnokii @riecatnor
This is a new design I worked on, I hope it got a Fedora aesthetic? I await your feedback. Thanks

@joyskye9 Your latest design looks very good! You've come so far since you started. :)

Thanks so much @viv

Hey everyone! Wow, there has been a TON of work on this, and it is really appreciated! I don't have time to review each design unfortunately, but I will grab some of the files to promote the events next week. Make sure to record your work here in your Outreachy application.

I hope you all are able to attend the release party :) register for the party here:

@gnokii can you upload an SVG for the poster concept with the green "33" -> the ones in this comment https://pagure.io/design/issue/701#comment-697832 Thanks!

I made a darker version of the design
