hey mizmo riecatnor i just started working on issue #702: Fedora Magazine Thumbnail for Classroom and I'm slightly unsure about what all I'm supposed to create from scratch. I checked out all the links mizmo sent and some existing thumbnails had graphic patterns, while others had photographs as background. For this particular issue, am I supposed to create a graphic image for the template or could I simply use a Creative Commons image from the internet? And if I'm supposed to create a graphic image, does it have to be in a pattern-like way(like the ones in template.svg file) ?

ishvanih: hey! so you could create an image for it, it doesnt have to be a pattern it can be what you like. I would say you might want to avoid creative commons licensed stuff because they pretty much all require attribution (except CC0) and i dont know how you would be able to make sure the attribution is given properly
ishvanih: so if you can find CC0 or public domain licensed bits, that might be better. pixabay, pexels have photography that i think is typically CC0, and freesvg and openclipart both have public domain svg art you can work with

Thank you @duffy ! As you can see for both of these, I tried including traditional classroom elements viz. pencils and graph paper. I was slightly unsure if I were doing it right 😅 but now that that confusion has waned, here are some more ideas that I had for this:

– a blackboard with a hand holding a chalk and the text on that board is fedora classroom session details (It would have been ideal if the text was written in a handwriting font but I understand that there is a design language that is to be complied with)
– featuring the faces of instructors alongside their name and FAS id
– using classroom/school/studying elements and making a pattern from that for the background
– a background pattern made of 1s and 0s to signify technology
– use of icons/symbols against different kinds of text. For instance, a profile icon against the instructor's name OR giving a background color to texts such as 'fedora classroom' so that it looks like a tag

@riecatnor @duffy I designed this for classroom thumbnail. As the classes are not physical that's why I used the concept of using an image with a computer showing class details.

It looks great, I was thinking if there's a way we can modify it to handle long Classroom names like: "Handling Package Test Cases with Automation", as that would result in the text being out of the box. Modifying the font size could be the way to go but it could feel like a little out of theme, what do you think ?

@riyajawandhiya Sure, I can assign this one to you. A few things to note:

• If you use any stock illustration that you didn't create yourself, we need to know where it came from and the license. Generally, we can only accept the usage of public domain works (such as on freesvg.org or openclipart.com) or Creative Commons licensed materials. Creative Commons works usually require attribution, though, so the attribution for the work needs to be in the design. The exception is CC0 which is similar to public domain and no attribution needed.

• The same goes for any photos, they should be public domain or CC0 ideally, if they are Creative Commons we need to know where they came from and an attribution. Pexels and pixabay are two good sites for cc0 photos.

• These are for Fedora magazine, there are guidelines for the images here that you will find helpful, including info on the dimensions for the image and fonts:

Hi @vanichitkara thanks for working on this one! A couple notes about this task and how to move forward:
- This is for a general classroom magazine banner, not specific to design, so we should design it with that in mind. Based on that, I think we may want to change the imagery from markers & colored pencils.
- I think we can use "Fedora Classroom" "Session Topic" "Instructed by" "Speaker Name" "Fedora Account Name: @user" as placeholders for the text

@riecatnor The thing I associate the most with classrooms is a blackboard so my design revision includes them as a background for the text. Please have a look over the 2 designs I came up with and suggest improvements. Thanks!

Hi folks! I am going to give a comment that applies to @dhairya15 and @vanichitkara :)

Both of these designs are nice, with some small improvements, could be quite successful. At the same time, neither of them have the Fedora aesthetic. Thinking about all the pieces of Fedora art and design you have been exposed to, try to re-imagine your concepts in a "fedora" way. Here are some ways you can capture the Fedora aesthetic:
- Use Fedora colors
- Use the Fedora logo
- Use graphics from Fedora badges
- Use previous Fedora graphics
