#805 Logo request for Fedora Mentor Summit
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by duffy. Opened 2 years ago by siddharthvipul1.

phenomenon

Fedora Mentor Summit is an unconference - in planning phase - for mentors participating in Mentored Projects.

reason

@jonatoni and I are planning its first iteration. The logo would be used on swag, promotional materials like [banners, tweets, website(?)], etc

recommendation

I don't have anything specific
it could be as simple as just the words beside logo or something creative

Hi there! My name is Jess Chitas and I'm a new intern in Red Hat's Waterford base. I am part of the UX team and I created something for you for the Mentor Summit! I wanted to keep it the theme of the majority of Fedoras branding but I added a handshake in there as the logo as summits are a social event and I assume it's all about getting to know people and helping people too! The colours of the logo aren't finalised so if there are a certain array of colours let me know and let me know what you think about it as well! :)

i love them madeline! i'll sketch up more options for a logo tomorrow as well, I have a few more ideas regarding more hands and even incorporate some of the fedora characters into it maybe to add a bit of fun into it.

I think this ticket is better in your hands @madelinepeck 😅

Noooo its better together in both our hands 😊 I think you started the ticket off wonderfully and helped inspire me to share some ideas. Now us and anyone else have a better shot at making a kickass logo with the more we post on here 😄

Some thumbnails I shared in the fedora design chat but just remembered to post here. Still think maybe it would be cool if we explored the idea of fedora characters interacting.

I love the hands with the electricity going between them and the one where theyre climbing the mountain! they just make me really happy for some reason!or even the one with the lightbulb inbetween the two circles

so many great ideas here
Thanks a bunch @jesschitas and @madelinepeck
I am looking forward to the logo you all come up with
@jonatoni, what do you think?

im currently vectorizing some of them but I will send them on soon!

@jesschitas Hey this is great progress!!!!

Do you have a favorite of the four?

I think probably my favorite is the lightbulb one.... the concept I think is straight on what mentorship is about - two people coming together and collaborating, and that interaction generating new ideas!

The speech bubbles I think, while beautifully rendered, I think are close to the icons we use for chat.fedoraproject.org and discussion.fedoraproject.org - those are chat and discussion forums respectively, so I think maybe better not to have any potential confusion come in with those.

I love the gesture of the figures in the mountain summit, but wonder if - because the peak is so high - it might give the impression this is really super hard? I mean, it's a challenge, but it's definitely not impossible, I might worry slightly folks might get the impression contributing to Fedora / open source is like a Mt. Everest sort of affair! Might be better visually to simplify this and leave the peak out, just have the step at the bottom? I think you could push this one more visually if you really liked the concept (I do like how the concept is a direct link to the Outreachy (https://outreachy.org) logo concept!)

My second favorite is the high-five hands. Hand gestures are really difficult to get right, but I love the concept of how the two hands working together have the energy generated from the interaction, and I love the angling of the energy in how you rendered it.

I think I would push the top two (the lightbulb one and the high-five hands one), and I think I would push them with an eye to making the artwork more "Fedora-y." I wish I had put together a good guide of what makes the way a thing is rendered more Fedora-y. But let me walk through a quick description of how I see it, and provide some visual examples to hopefully help explain it.

  • Line quality : Illustrations / logo marks in Fedora tend to have thick, rather than thin lines. They tend to be very straight / geometric and not too organic or loose, with mostly even widths
  • Outlines : We don't normally outline shapes unless absolutely necessary - usually we go flat without an outline.
  • Palette : We tend to stick pretty strictly to the Fedora palette and shades of grey (shades of grey typically a little towards warm grey)
  • Gradients : If we use gradients they are very slight (except for backdrops... I'm trying to introduce bold backdrop gradients.)
  • Shapes : Lines and shapes in Fedora brand graphics tend to be very rounded and simplified. Ideally they could work in one color.
  • Fonts : Montserrat pretty much for anything branding (except for the "fedora" and "flock" logotypes.)

There's of course exceptions to these, but usually any individual Fedora mark hits most of these so they (hopefully) hang together as a "family" with a similar look.

Here's a current working version of a Fedora brand family sheet (or so I call it :) ):

Here's the aforementioned core color palette:

Here's the cartoon mascots (which I know you're familiar with having done excellent work sketching new poses for them for the gaming logo) - they are part of the "family", but they do have outlines... but they're not logo marks, so it's a bit of an exception there. And they do reflect the palette for the most part (the panda's tummy colors might need adjusting to match), but the greys and the roundedness are along the right vein.

These are the humanoid characters I mentioned at the last design team meeting - this is an older version I had handy (uses the old logo), but they use the brand colors, have no outlines, very slight gradients... faces are simplified by basically being blank.

These are also dated in terms of the old logo being present, but the little iconic graphics here (wings, hand wavy people, trophy, gears) I think are actually pretty analogous to the type of mark you might want to be making here to go along with the "Fedora Mentor Summit" in terms of the level of complexity etc. You can see how they are quite thick and rounded and single color and all of that.

So all of that to say.... I suspect your next step would be to look at these two candidates and see how to Fedora-ify them :) For the hands, I'd simplify them a little bit more while trying to keep the same gesture... basically iconify them. Some examples of simplified hand gestures of a similar vein:

Some of these are so simplified, there are no fingers on the hands :) I suspect that might work well but something to play with. You don't have to drop the fingers or even change the configuration of what you've got with the hands too much though - I think if you shorten the fingers and kind of make the main palm shape dominant you could achieve a similar affect, kind of this sort of hand, where the finger length is much shorter proportionally (and you could even making them shorter still proportionally to simplify the overall shape without losing the gesture):

That's what I'd recommend pursuing with the hands!

With the lightbulb - I don´t think there is much to do to Fedora-ify this one. I would thicken up the lines on the lightbulb or even consider making it a solid with the filament a cut out? (So basically inverting it and dropping the outline?) I would shift the colors to be the three Fedora blue colors (fedora light blue, fedora blue, fedora dark blue). I might change the shapes from circles to Fedora speech bubbles! That's about it though. Then play with the amount the two bubble shapes intersect, and just make sure the mark reads at small sizes!

Anyway hope this helps, always here to help or if you have a different direction you'd rather go let's talk about it!

I agree with @duffy
The light-bulb and the high-five are my favorite too.
I am hoping to confirm the logo this week so that we can open registration links as quickly as possible and start with promotional steps :)
Many thanks to everyone involved, once again!

The light bulb logo looks great to me :)
Thanks @jesschitas
@jonatoni What do you think?

My two cents, @jesschitas.

I like the light bulb logo a lot - more specifically, the two-toned rendition of it. Can you please make the bulb logo in the two-toned rendition have a gradient which moves from a lighter shade of blue on the left side to the darker shade of blue on the right side - so as to fall in line with the venn-diagramish outline?

Can we make the hands logo a bit more Fedorable apart from the colors? Take for instance, the light bulb logo had the Fedora logo as, say, its filament - so maybe a treatment of that kind might end up making the hands logo desirable. Nice work on both of the mockups by the way!

I like your ideas @t0xic0der but I worry if it will get too complex. The great thing I like about the logos that they are simple! when there are a lot of things going on, or gradients, it can be challenging during printing or especially embroidery on swag

Ah right, we seem to have discussed about it and yet, it went out of my head. It absolutely makes sense to keep it as simple as possible for the sake of both, consistency (across the representation of it on, say, print, swag, sites etc.) and convenience (doing gradients on embroidery can be tough). So I'd say that the second rendition of the bulb logo looks good as-is.

I love the light bulb logo too - thanks for working on it @jesschitas :100:

@siddharthvipul1 let's use the light bulb logo

im so glad to have worked on this project and thanks so much guys! @jonatoni @siddharthvipul1 and thanks to @t0xic0der for the suggestions and to @madelinepeck for the inspiration! i feel like im writing an oscars speech haha

i'll definitelly look into that, thanks @duffy !

i do really like the lightbulb but for me my favourite are the hands. for me they bring a sense of unity and mentorship but also teamwork as well! i really like the design of the hands as well and it was the logo i was more proud of. what do you guys think? @siddharthvipul1 @jonatoni

@jesschitas, like I mentioned at https://pagure.io/design/issue/805#comment-780507, it surely looks nice but it somehow misses out on a "Fedorable" touch that the lightbulb logo does not. If you can change the hands logo with a small suggested touch, I think it could potentially be a great logo for the purpose.

If you want me to, i can change that but if youre happy with the lightbulb, im happy with that too! Whatever works for you! If the lightbulb one is your favourite I'd go with that oone but I was just saying that the hands are m,y favourite personally but its your call at the end of the day!!
