#424 Proposal: Remove inactive ambassadors directly from the FAS group
Closed: Complete Opened by robyduck.

This ticket is a follow up of discussions in Infra pagure and after that in the Council pagure.
Basically the Infra team has concerns with setting user accounts as inactive/disabled (as per ambassadors rules) without any project-wide policy. The reason is that a subgroup, as ambassadors, should not be able to request an overall FAS ID disabling, just because the subgroup has a rule for that. A project-wide rule should solve that, and the Council will consider if such a rule is necessary or not.
As outcome of both discussions mentioned above, we have been adviced to handle the inactive ambassadors by removing them from the FAS group.

Background

Just for the record, the actual process works like this:

  • FAmSCo runs a script and parses all fedmsg activities of ambassadors
  • Ambassadors without any activitiy over the last 18 months get an email from FAmSCo, where we ask if they are still contributing, and if yes, we ask the user to login into their Fedora account to produce some fedmsg activity
  • After 2 weeks FAmSCo runs the script again and makes a list of the people who are still inactive, asking Infra to set them as inactive
  • After another 6 months the inactive accounts will be removed from the ambassadors FAS group automatically (this is a process which is apparently NOT working)

Change proposed

I think that users who don't do anything within Fedora world for 1 and a half year can be considered as inactive, even if they are ambassadors and don't contribute technically. Ambassadors should keep themself up to date, and it is necessary to look into our systems, MLs or whatever to get the latest informations and features. Ambassadors are the voice of Fedora and are the first persons users talk to during events.
I'd like to propose this change:

  • Ambassadors without any activity for the last 18 months will be removed from the FAS group
  • The removal will be tracked by an Infra ticket, where FAmSCo puts in the list of inactive accounts
  • If people want to restart contributing and come back at some point, they can point to the removal ticket.
  • A mentor will take care of updating them about the latest Fedora features and changes, and will also handle the reactivation in the FAS group.
NOTE: this is not intended as a new mentoring, just as a quick update for a person who already was ambassador in the past!

Doing this we will resolve also the not working automatic process, which should remove ambassadors from the FAS group after 2 years (18 months + 6 months of inactivitiy).

I would like to get feedback about this and discuss it in the next meeting.

I find this proposal quite sensible.
Although I see the concerns, I still think this is a change for better.

I'm +1 to your proposal @robyduck

+1 also from me...
