#479 Linux Day Badges
Closed Opened by josereyesjdi.

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
- Badge to be awarded for attending Linux Day

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is awarded for certain kinds of activities:
1) What are those activities?
- 25 years of Linux
2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans? users? sponsors?)
- Organizers, speakers and attendees. (3)
3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
- To spread the use of Linux and Free Software, specifically Fedora.
4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- Once a year. This year is August 27th.
5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console? by using a web interface?)
- Manually

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
- I would like to have a Tux and Panda with caps like birthday party release.

Do you have a link about this Linux Days? We have LinuxDays in Prague every year and there are Linux-Tage in Chemnitz. I'd rather not confuse those events.

Just a suggestion, as is my first badge, the background and the theme may not be appropriate

Hi Emerson! Thanks for working on this! Some quick feedback, I know this is your first badge ticket so you're learning the process as you go:

  • We always post SVG sources for badge artwork (you can attach right here on the ticket!) Ultimately the badge SVGs go into the repo.

  • The "25th" inner text should be thicker. Take a look at other badges with text in them to get a feel for the weights we typically do:
    https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/building-the-outer-ring-copr-build-iv
    https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/the-tower-of-babel-koji-success-vii
    https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/parselmouth-iii

  • I think "25th" might be too vague, maybe better to have it say "25 YEARS"

  • You want the outlines around the artwork to be consistent. We tend to have very bold outline strokes on badge artwork (See the panda you included, and the thickness vs the penguin's weight?) The party hats for example have much too narrow an outline, it should be thickened up!

  • The style of the penguin is a bit angular, can you round him out a bit? We tend to do chubby, rounded characters (see the style sheets here for a visual):

https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-badges/attachment/wiki/DesignResources/badgers.svg

Hope this helps! looking forward to your next draft!

Hi Emerson!

Great progress! A few more hints for moving forward:

  • You want to thicken the text up even more! View it at 100% and see how readable it is as a guide to how thick the text should be... you can see below at 100% it's hard to read:

[[Image(Screenshot from 2016-08-25 15-22-38.png)]]

  • similarly you wanna beef up the outlines... the hat on tux's head is barely able to be made out at 100%, i'd scale it up too. similar with panda's hat. Beef up the outlines around both hars and the balloon.

  • as mentioned earlier, i'd change the style of the tux to be more rounded, particularly his beak and maybe make his eyes bigger. you want to try to match the style of the badges characters.

Looking forward!
