#25 Diversity team interaction with other Fedora sigs/groups
Closed: Complete 7 years ago Opened 8 years ago by amsharma.

We are trying to resolve "How does Diversity interact with other sigs/groups? What concrete and planned efforts are there?"

Here are some example -

  1. Providing resources to enable the Fedora contributors to foster diversity and inclusion in their teams.
  2. Using survey data, identify key teams to focus on for Diversity and Inclusion strategy
  3. CommOps and Diversity - Diversity leveraging CommOps for Outreach, CommOps helping Diversity to understand community and its’ needs.
  4. Ambassadors and Diversity - Create strategies targeted towards onboarding contributors from underrepresented groups at conferences and events.
  5. Marketing and Diversity - Create content on Fedora Magazine to promote awareness about diverse Fedora community

Next Action Item is to breakdown these points into smaller action items.
I believe we already have some tickets, which can be mapped to this issue. like -

@amsharma Do you think we need to work more on this ? Instead, I think we should go ahead and open individual tickets for each team with defined tasks so that we can have an in depth discussion.

I agree with the thought, but do we have enough data to put in for the individual ticket per team here? If you have more information and data for each team, please feel free to open tickets and we will close this one. @bee2502 thanks

I think there should be a discussion in Diversity sessions at FLOCK about this with community members contributing to different parts of Fedora -

  • What do they think of diversity and inclusion in that subproject/ team? mainly what is lacking, what should be focused on first..
  • How do they think Diversity team could support them?
and then we can move forward using those inputs.

Also, it would be really helpful if we could have one person from each subproject to co-ordinate Diversity efforts for that team with.

For Ambassadors, we could also try to create some materials i.e. videos and slides etc to showcase at events like conferences and release parties. Ideally, I would like to bring this up for discussion in regional Ambassador meetings first and then move forward but I am not sure if it's the right way to go

I think there should be a discussion in Diversity sessions at FLOCK about this with community members contributing to different parts of Fedora

The only session I am aware of is the "Diversity Team Hackfest", which is a three-hour block. Depending on who is in attendance there, we could try to collect any feedback on this during the session, towards the end when we've accomplished / met some of our other deliverables / goals for the session.

What might also be effective is to actively seek out members of other sub-projects in "hallway track" to get their thoughts and opinions on this. This could also intersect with #31.

For Ambassadors, we could also try to create some materials i.e. videos and slides etc to showcase at events like conferences and release parties.

What kind of material do you have in mind? Are you thinking of common templates for talks / sessions on D&I topics, like in #20, and other video material like in #9 / #31? It will be easier to bring it up at a regional level if we know what "package" we want to present.

  • I wouldn't suggest a common template for the whole talk but rather a few slides of information which should definitely be included. The speaker/ambassador then can do story telling around it.
Additionally, we can also have some example slides and presentations from prior talks of Ambassadors related to diversity and inclusion in Fedora.
  • I would also like a poster or flyer for Fedora Women which can be easily kept at Fedora Booth for people to look at. It could also have some stories of women in Fedora. We could also translate it in different languages so that language is not a barrier.
  • Some swag specific to diversity and inclusion for people to pick up at booth, showcase support and engage with Fedora. I am really in support of stickers for this as it can be distributed easily, reach is wide and it wouldn't cost much. Since we have the budget, we could really look into this.

More ideas and comments welcome.

I see this as a similar comparison to the talking points the Marketing team helps produce every cycle, except instead of technical details, it can be information about the D&I efforts in Fedora. This would definitely be awesome if we could maintain it somewhere (I'm inclined to consider hosting it here in this repo with Pagure docs, but we can get to implementation later).

The best place to start with this would be identifying the list of bullets and critical information about the D&I efforts in Fedora. I think most of this is already done in the goals section of our wiki, but we can expand it out further with examples of our past work. This could also be something we consider for our work session at Flock, but could also be done in an IRC meeting.

Before advertising and pointing people towards Fedora Women, I think we will want to finish and execute #19, so we don't point people towards an inactive community.

On the contrary, I think we can create promotional material about women in Fedora generally. I would love to have this as a deliverable for Ambassadors to bring with them, especially if it's an event that makes sense for the target audience.

As a logistical note, given that FWD planning is underway, what would be the most cost-effective solution for this is to order a large quantity of stickers / other easily transportable swag for FWD ( #26 ). We could distribute a fair amount of it for the event and keep other amounts in reserve. This would save significantly if we order a larger amount up-front than split it out later on.

I agree with @jflory7 , first we need to figure out how to revitalize Fedora Women and see what we can improve/change.

I strongly believe that mindshare is the place where diversity team should also be included to interact and to achieve the its goals. I would like to discuss this as well in meeting. @jonatoni @bee2502 @jflory7 and everyone, please suggest your thoughts on this.

@amsharma I don't know if I agree that Diversity should have a seat on the Mindshare Committee.

The Diversity team's representation with a seat on the Council helps connect our work to the higher-level project initiatives. While it's important that all parts of Fedora consider diversity and inclusion in project on-boarding and coordination, I feel we do that through our representation on the Council. I see it as a higher priority for us to select the Diversity Adviser and utilize the seat on the Fedora Council for representation than for us to participate with Mindshare.

I know there is work being done on the Diversity Adviser position, but I need to lean more on @mattdm and @bex for that one. Since our team is also small, I think it would be difficult for our team's bandwidth to have both a Council representative and a Mindshare representative. I also imagine that is the same reason why @robyduck may not have considered Diversity with a seat for Mindshare.

When Diversity team's representation will happen?
Mindshare is happening right now, we will have great chance to act on collaboration.
We had this conversation during flock that diversity should participate in mindshare as it will define many processes.

Is it better for Diversity to be represented via the Council and have a holistic view or via the Mindshare team?

Ok, let's clarify some things here. Mindshare is happening now, that's true, but this doesn' t mean we don't want to change the Comittee. We are all aware, Fedora MIndshare is still far away from being clearly defined and we probably need to add much more responsibilities in the future.
We decided to start with the teams you see in the wiki page, and for now Diversity is not represented in the MIndshare Comittee, as well as L10n is not there. While Diversity has a seat on a higher level, L10n actually doesn't have anything. Let's start working out the first things and then see if we can add/replace one or more teams.
Doing too many things at the same time often ends up with doing anything really well.
Finally, same as for FAmSCo or even the Council, inputs from contributors/teams are welcome and if you feel you have open issues or requests being Mindshare related in some way, don't hesitate to open a ticket in Mindshare pagure.

Discussed in 2017-11-17 meeting.

Council and Mindshare

This topic was discussed together for both tickets #25 and #46. The Fedora Diversity Team is focusing our efforts on the auxiliary seat on the Fedora Council. The team believes we can connect our goals with the higher-level project direction at the Council. However, we also noted that our team representative is always welcome to participate in the future Mindshare meetings, just without voting privileges.

A new ticket is about to be filed for us to collect nominations for the Diversity Team Representative seat, as noted in Fedora Council charter.

Ticket closed.
