#612 Migrate Screencasting wiki page
Closed: complete 7 months ago by ankursinha. Opened a year ago by ankursinha.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ScreenCasting -> would be great to have this as an updated quick-doc

If the purpose of the article is to introduce out of box screen recording tool that comes with desktop, I suggest adding a section on KDE Spectacle. The latest 23.04 release of KDE Spectacle supports screen recording.

@ankursinha What do you mean by "updated quick doc"? As far as I see we currently don't have an article about that topic?

Sorry about that: I meant to migrate the wiki page but update it based on current info, since it's likely outdated

@ankursinha Yes, I understand now. The Wiki page is from Feb. 2021, quite recent compared to a lot of articles we have online at QD. And you have contributed a lot to it. I think, I'll migrate it as is as a first step. That's not so much work. I would then announce the new article, together with jitsy I just imported, on the mailing list or another proper location, asking everyone to try it and provide feedback and improvements, if any. What do you think about it? And if you agree, what would be the best path for the announcement(s)?

That sounds good.

I don't know what a good announcement location is tbh. When I need help reviewing docs, I tend to mail the -devel list. Do we have a location for announcing docs updates to the community that we could use?

Unfortunately, so far as I know, we have currently no established location for announcing docs updates to the community. I would like to establish such an occasion and try to report every month or so what is new or needs a check-out. It would be an attempt to trigger feedback and hopefully inspire involvement.

@ankursinha Just added ScreenCast to Quick Docs (https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/screencast-apps-comparison/). Please check.

The Wiki page referred to 3 shell scripts. One of them is accessible, the other two end in a upload page. (https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&wpDestFile=ScreenCasting_test.ogg & https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:ScreenCasting_fedora-video-timestamp.sh)

I commented these part out, so far, but left them in the adoc file. Maybe you know, where to find those files of you have them locally abailable.

@hankuoffroad

I suggest adding a section on KDE Spectacle.

The article is online now (see above). Would you like to add a brief parapgraph about KDE Spectacle?

Thanks, I'll take a look and try to update the page this week. On my list of TODOs now.

Opened a PR for a review. The feature is quite basic.

https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/quick-docs/pull-request/626

OBS Studio is listed as a recommended screen recording tool. Compared to desktop tool, OBS will require an article on its own due to its advanced features used by video content creators. Even the most used features of OBS will be five, to say the least. Impossible to create OBS how-to guides without images. Original wiki converted article looks busy already. Upstream docs is quite comprehensive.

Do we really need a QD article here?

I think just leaving a link to the upstream doc should be fine here. (We don't want to duplicate lots of documentation and then have to keep it up to date)

PR made https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/quick-docs/pull-request/640

If there isn't major update required, can we close this for now? At a later date, more avid writers could make it better.
