#676 [main] Doc issue in file modules/ROOT/pages/getting-started-guide.adoc
Opened 5 months ago by peartown. Modified 5 months ago

There is a mismatch of information given by the 2nd and 3rd para of the Understanding Linux -> Root section.

For security reasons, the root account is disabled by default on Fedora Workstation. Instead, the default user will be added to the group 'wheel'. Members of this group are able to acquire root permissions using the 'sudo' command. Whenever this user wants to make a system-wide change, such as stopping a fundamental program like the web server (httpd), the corresponding command is preceded by a sudo, e.g. sudo systemctl stop httpd. The sudo then asks for the password of the user, not of root.

Always when making system-wide changes, such as installing new software or starting/stopping fundamental programs required by the operating system. The user is prompted for the root password

It is confusing when one para reads that the root account is disabled, and system administration is ensured by a 'normal' user via his password and sudo. While the next para reads that a user is prompted for the root password.

A certain quick fix could be to just swap the one para for the other. Then, the first two para of the section would read generally about root account in Linux and the third (last) para about solution of root permissions in Fedora Workstation.

For reference: the quick fix PR #677

I propose just to delete the 3rd paragraph (starting with "Always when making ....") in den section Root.

I guess it is just a left over when introducing the switch to disabling root by default. The section no longer makes any sense at all.

Yes, it's better solution than mine.

...The section no longer makes any sense at all.

That's also probably true.

I added a commit to my PR, removing the above para. However, I'm using pagure web interface, not my local environment and cli. As there are already new commits to the main branch, I'm not sure the merge could be done without a conflict. I'm fine if you edit the page on your own and my PR is not used. I'm sorry for my git "expertise".

Mine is probably not much better :-)

Anyway, the merge worked without an error. So it should show up with the next Docs rebuild.

Thanks vor contributing!
