#280 Master list of Fedora People
Opened by wispfox. Modified

Our research and analysis (brainstorming log) suggests that we need a searchable, filterable master list of Fedora people. This will help make Hubs a canonical resource for people and events in Fedora.

I will attach my quick mockup of this to the comments.

First, the mockup of the page overall.

And a closeup of the search box experience.

One more because I realized that there was no way to do anything with people you find!

Here's some feedback on the mockups!

@duffy: Thanks for the feedback! I've made changes and have some questions, see the mockups below. :)

Going to give next round of feedback in text here :)

Location specification for search filter

So to change from "you" to another address - makes sense - but consider that outside the US the standard street/city/state/country doesn't work. I think maybe making it an open field that can take whatever location data would make sense although it'll be harder on the backend I guess. I'd mock it up as a single field and we can haggle with the developers about how to implement when we get to that point.

Pagination vs Lazy Load

Any reason you'd rather not lazy load? One thing I like about lazy load is that it's more clear filters apply to the entire data set, not just the page that you're on.

Maybe drop column sorting. It probably doesn't give the user all that much anyway. Then you don't have to worry about the sorting order issues. We can just present it in the order as you designed it (which I think makes the most sense.)

10 miles

Good point about units; this should default to a value appropriate for the user's locale. (km for most of the world I guess.) I don't think people would want to change units - units is something you understand intuitively, if km are native to you even if you're not in a km country you think in km, same with miles. So I think default to the user's locale unit and make it an option they can change very far away from this screen (probably a localization prefs area of their user settings.)

Search Box for filters

I'm still not getting the suggestions box that pops up when you start typing in the "All People" field of the search filter area. It seems overly complicated to me. Are there search filters you're using as a model for this?

The time-based ones are already covered by the last online column; group membership maybe just do as a separate widget in the filter form?

Profile preview hoverbox

When you click on more - goes to their full profile?

The listing of the location in the map when looking at a specific individual may suggest that's the location of the person you are looking at, rather than continuing to be where you were searching from.

Will this be pulling data from FAS?

The initial data will be pulled from FAS. But then there would be a form to collect additional data.
