There is a chat icon in the topbar that at the moment doesnt do anything.

Is there a plan to use this with the chat widget, or is this an old element that can be removed?

the chat icon is to access the PM interface. I don't know how that will work now that we've 'farmed out' chat. i'd say drop it for MVP but we are going to have to handle PMs somehow!
