#11473 mailing list servers/owner
Closed: Fixed with Explanation a year ago by kevin. Opened 2 years ago by rcritten.

The freeIPA project currently has three mailing lists. Two are hosted on lists.fedoraproject.org and one is hosted by Red Hat at https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/freeipa-interest

The Red Hat service is going to be shut down so we need to migrate the list.

There is an identically-named list at https://lists.fedorahosted.org/archives/list/freeipa-interest@lists.fedorahosted.org/ but we have no idea who created it or when. It is also on fedorahosted.org vs fedoraproject.org.

Can you put us in contact with the list owner so we can discuss ownership? (heck, it might be one of us and we've forgotten about it).

What is the difference between lists on the two sites? Ideally we'd host all three together. Is it possible to close one and re-open on the other?

AFAIU the listman is going to be shut down at the end of August. Once we have the new list we'll post a couple of warnings for users to manually migrate themselves. We will not maintain archives.

That list is in a very weird state. I can see archives, but no posts and if I try and go to the management for it... it says it doesn't exist. ;(

I could try and delete it and we could add a new one (either with the same name or with fedoraproject.org, or... we also have lists.pagure.io I think).

The only difference between the two domains is the name. They are in the same mailman instance, just send with a different domain.

+1 on trying to delete the odd list.

For consistency with our existing lists we'd prefer using freeipa-interest@lists.fedoraproject.org

You can make me the initial owner and I'll mark the others as they join the new list.

ok. I made the list and set you as owner. Let us know if you hit any issues with it.

The other list doesn't seem to really exist. I am not sure why that empty thing appears in the archives. ;(

Perhaps @abompard has some idea?

We can look at that in the background...

I can't find the new list. If you search for lists only our existing lists show up: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/?name=freeipa

The other/weird list is still visible, https://lists.fedorahosted.org/archives/list/freeipa-interest@lists.fedorahosted.org/ and still lacks an admin screen (404).

To add something strange. If you search for freeipa lists at https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/?name=freeipa for a brief period you'll see two inactive lists named freeipa-interest

Ah so if I uncheck hide inactive both freeipa-interest lists show when searching the list of lists.
It seems confused because fedorahosted.org and fedoraproject.org are the same host I assume, so managing one appears to manage the other. I fear if I delete one, it will delete the other as well.

I can see the fedoraproject one now, but I still get not found on the admin interface for the hosted one...

Same here.

Since I can manage the fedoraproject one I modifiedsome the settings to work the way we'd like it to and I can see it in the admin interface list of lists, but searching for it still returns nothing (well, sometimes briefly it'll appear). I have "Show list on index page" enabled.

If both need to be removed again and one re-added I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm reluctant to move forward with this sort of ghost list.

Hey folks!
So, I think the status of the list is that the @fp.o one exists and works, but doesn't show up in the archives by default because no email has been sent to it yet. It does show up if you uncheck "hide inactive".

The @fedorahosted one has been deleted from mailman but still exists in the archives because it must have been created at some point, maybe during initial import of the mailman2 lists. Deleting a list in the admin does not delete its archives.
The archives of the fedorahosted one seem to be empty, so if you want I can delete them for clarity.

Yes, please delete the archives for clarity. I can do a test post to the @fp.o list which it sounds like will unhide it.

The list can now be found now that I sent the first post, thanks for the suggestion.

@abompard can you delete the archives of the fedorahosted one? and explain how to do it? :)

I've written a small script to make it easier for future times. Just SSH on mailman01 and run:

hyperkitty-delete-list.py list-address@lists.domain.tld

So I ran:

hyperkitty-delete-list.py freeipa-interest@lists.fedorahosted.org

And the list is now gone.

ok. Shall we close this now? Or is there anything further to do?

Things appear to be working as expected, thanks for the help. From my perspective this can be closed.

Great. Sorry it took so long to sort out. ;(
