#12085 Create #metrics:fedoraproject.org address for #telemetry:gnome.org
Closed: Fixed 3 months ago by kevin. Opened 3 months ago by catanzaro.

Describe what you would like us to do:

Please create a Matrix address #metrics:fedoraproject.org for the existing Matrix room #telemetry:gnome.org.

When do you need this to be done by? (YYYY/MM/DD)

I hate this question. It's certainly not urgent. But Kevin says he can do it today, so: 2024/07/26

(And feel free to leave the room when complete, unless you just want to stay and lurk.)

Is there a need for this to be searchable from users of the Fedora matrix? I remember at one point Kevin (or some administrator account) had to stay in certain channels for this to happen but I don't know if that is still needed.

Is there a need for this to be searchable from users of the Fedora matrix?

Of course. How else would people find it?

I remember at one point Kevin (or some administrator account) had to stay in certain channels for this to happen but I don't know if that is still needed.

Huh, that seems weird and extreme?

I may be misremembering a different issue. I was having trouble searching for channels in the app and Kevin fixed it by having something join the channel at which point #fedora-<something> could be found easily. I don't remember exactly what or if it was a temp solution..

This area is somewhat confusing, let me try and explain.

In order to make a 'local alias' of a room you have to be a user from that server. (so, my @kevin:fedoraproject.org account can make a #metrics:fedoraproject.org local alias)

In order to publish that local alias to the fedoraproject.org room directory (so other people can search for and find it when they query fedoraproject.org), I need my @kevin:fedoraproject.org user to be a moderator in the room. in order to edit it's room list entry.

matrix only syncs/federates rooms where there is at least one local user joined. So, if I do the above, and then remove my @kevin:fedoraproject.org user, the server will stop federating the room and while people can still search for it, when they try and join fedoraproject.org server will say it doesn't know that room and user will get a 'cannot join room from that server' or similar wacky message.

Longer term I want to make a generic fedoraproject.org admin account, but it's not gotten high on the priority list yet.

So, if you still want this, please make my @kevin:fedoraproject.org a moderator and I can add the directory entry (I think you can then demote me if you like) and I will just idle that account in that room.

Wow, that's awful. Your sacrifice in being willing to join a bunch of different rooms is appreciated. I've made you a moderator.

Too bad we have this strange distinction between :fedoraproject.org and :fedora.im. There are plenty of people with :fedora.im accounts who will be in the room. Oh well.

Well, it's kind of intentional. This way :fedoraproject.org rooms are 'official' (ie, someone set them up) and :fedora.im rooms are 'unofficial' (anyone set them up).

Anyhow, now done.

Did you want this added to the fedoraprojectl.org 'space' as well? under SIGs? Or just leave it searchable, but not in the space?

Please do add it under SIGs. Thanks!

I'm not sure if we broke it somehow, but currently we have addresses #metrics:fedora.im (created by Neal Gompa) and #telemetry:gnome.org (created by me), but no :fedoraproject.org address. I guess the :fedora.im address is adequate, though.

Huh. I definitely saw it from my fedoraproject.org account, but no where else. ;(

So, I removed it and re-added it, and now it seems like it's showing up?

Yes, now it's showing up. Thanks!
