#301 Flock 2025: talk on Welcome to Fedora process: URGENT! Deadline: 22nd Feb!!
Closed: Fixed by theprogram. Opened by ankursinha.

Folks, based on the second theme here:

Quoting for convenience:

Theme #2 - Welcoming New Voices: Pathways for Fedora Contributors

Grow our community of Friends with an inclusive and welcoming space for new and current contributors. These workshops and talks should focus on beginner-friendly or hands-on sessions to introduce newcomers and long-time community members to some of the advanced topics of contributing to Fedora, and discover new ways of engaging in the project.

What does this mean to you? Think:

  • I could host a workshop that hacks on easy fixes or good-first-issues in the area that I work in to increase contributions to the project in this area that could do with some extra support.
  • I could do a talk on to show how easy it is to collaborate with me/my team/SIG and interest some people in working on this more with me/us
  • I could share some insights and ways on how best to maintain a package over several releases
  • Could I talk about how I became a contributor, and share ideas on how to follow in my footsteps?
  • Maybe I can present something about being blocked on something, and how I and/or my team worked through it in Fedora

A talk on our welcome to Fedora process would be great here to increase awareness in the community. We can come up with a quick submission. The CFP closes on 23rd Feb, though, so this is SUPER URGENT:

The main question here is: are any Join SIG members going to flock that could present the talk? if you are going, please note it here. We'll all come up with the slides etc. together, but we do need to make sure someone can present them at Flock.

I am hoping to make it to Flock this year, but my attendance always depends on whether I can get a Schengen visa in time. At the moment, I'm assuming I will be there.

I've set up a shared document here to write the proposal, with a WIP title:

https://hackmd.io/@sanjayankur31/ryJC5Cg9Jg

I wish I could go, but I just can't this year. Last year was so awesome, and the event was formative for my oldest son, who attended with me.

When I hopped on the bandwagon I felt (of my own internal doing) somewhat pressured to find 'one thing' to come get involved with. Over the last year I've just been exploring different bits of the Fedora community and getting my feet wet here and there. Most people either saw me at the welcome desk at Flock or trying to catch the occasional new contributor so I can make them a welcome ticket. I have poked and prodded some of the infrastructure, I tested some updates and packages coming out of the KDE SIG, and I even linked up with the Fedora Server SIG. I even wrote a guide on how easy it was to use the Fedora Server qcow2 image to fire up a VM on Proxmox, learning how to commit the changes and Asciidoc syntax along the way.

I guess all of that is to say you don't have to box yourself into just one thing. There is an entire buffet out there, and you can nibble your way around it while you try to find 'your spot'. If there was anything I would tell new or prospective contributors, it' this:

Jump in, the water is fine and the people are amazing.

I have added a draft idea to https://hackmd.io/@sanjayankur31/ryJC5Cg9Jg
Can't say I'm super impressed with my draft. If anyone can add any ideas, I'm happy to write them up as a presentation 'blurb'.

Note, we will be speaking to people already super-engaged with Fedora, with very few new people there.

I have added some referential materials in the HackMd document from all the Join Fedora talks I have done over many years. Let me know if that help or any other assistance is needed from my end.
