#101 Welcome to Fedora, @smoliicek!
Closed by smoliicek. Opened by farchord.

Hello @smoliicek ! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hello everyone,

Welcome Vit, great to have you here. I've added some "interest" tags for you, but please modify them as you see fit.

What can we help you with at the moment? Please do let us know.

Hello and thank you! I modified the interest tags a bit, but not too much.

I'm currently still exploring everything in the Fedora project, but I also already found some groups that I find interesting and would like to help out in - Quality and Infrastructure - I actually attended the Quality meeting that was today and also sent a "self-introduction" to both of the mailing lists.

I have one question - when is it appropriate to ask for the temp membership? Can I ask for it now or should I wait?

Hi @smoliicek : sorry, I missed the notification from your comment.

Could you clarify what you mean by "temp membership"? We usually add people to the group temporarily if they need access to things like the wiki---where one has to be a member of at least one group to be able to edit it, for spam prevention purposes.

Otherwise most people gain access to these resources as they join different groups and contribute to them. Most groups don't require any of this---it's usually only required if one is maintaining packages and so on, but for that one needs to be sponsored to the package maintainers group in the first place already.

@joshuabvarghese : could you please note why this was closed using one of the status tags? It just helps us track how things went.

Reopening for the moment.

@ankursinha hey, no worries - i interpreted the meaning of it differently, thanks for the clarification.
in my case, i already got added to the fedora-contributors and the fi-apprentice, so i already meet the CLA+1 rule for editing the wiki.

as for more updates:
i also already made a contribution to the fedora-infra ansible repo and regullary attend their and the Fedora Quality team meetings

That's great to hear.

If there's anything we can help with, please do let us know. If you feel you know your way around and don't quite need this ticket any more, please let us know (or feel free to close this ticket with the appropriate status flag yourself).
