#110 Welcome to Fedora @thanevim!

Welcome

Hello @thanevim ! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

The only active participation I have had in FOSS has been testing/QA for Rockbox
I imagine my place to be in a QA capacity, with focus on KDE Plasma (sorry, I just don't like how single-focused and bulky Gnome 3 appears to me)
I'm bouncing between Linux Mint and Fedora on my main systems, longing for staying with Fedora (but had to leave it on my main due to instabilities that I now think were just the photo frame plasmoid having no cleanup routine...)
I can mix music and do some sound design/mixing, but my creativity is lacking
I'm no stranger to the shell
I have experience with git/version control, but it's limited. I will happily take reminders on it as well as mentoring on all other FOSS tools of the trade that get used on the day-to-day in QA for Fedora. I have no issues with self-teaching except that I need cause to figure out and use software. It's difficult for me to self-motivate learning a tool without cause (Ie I know all I know about partitioning because I've needed to solve weird hard drive issues, and from there let curiosity take the reigns)
I'm comfortable on forums and on Matrix chat, though I tend to prefer the live nature of Matrix. I've moderated forums for small communities, including a video game that sadly got abandoned...
I used a small amount of the Rockbox mailing list, but that would have been back in like 2009/10, so this is learning-as-I-go.
I'm looking at putting in somewhere between 1-3 hours a day as a rough average, so probably 7-12 hours a week on the low end
I want to be as helpful as I can, so I'm open to any questions that may have been raised from my essay above 😅. Looking forward to working with everyone!
