#111 Welcome to Fedora @ducktypegeese

Welcome

Hello ducktypegeese! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hey everyone! My name is Andrew and I was most recently a junior Data Engineer. I've been a Fedora user for about a year now and it has effectively ended my distro hopping; I learned of Fedora simply by just searching up on good, stable Linux distributions. My main language is Python with experience in other DE related technologies and I'd love to get involved and contribute in anyway that I can.

Besides tech/work stuff, I enjoy gaming, reading murder mysteries, and recently have gotten into singing.

As for the other questions:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
      • I've resolved a few tickets before in a couple projects but never been integrated into a community.
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
      • Ideally someone who gets to learn a lot, sate my curiosity about various topics that I didn't get to experience at work, and help other new members as they come along.
  • your background/skills:

    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
      • Yes, I use the regular Fedora Workstation as my daily driver. Previously, I've used Ubuntu, PopOS!, and dabbled into EndeavourOS a bit.
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
      • I don't have much non-tech skills that would be particularly relevant to Fedora but I do have some experience in music through piano lessons when I was younger and have been taking vocal lessons for over a year. I'm also fluent in Korean so if there is ever a push to getting a Korean translation for the docs I am sure I can be of use there.
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
      • My day job was as a Data Engineer so I have experience or am familiar with the standard tooling used there alongside other stuff. More specifically:
      • My main languages are Python and SQL.
      • I've used a few mainstream databases (BigQuery, Snowflake, PostgreSQL)
      • In terms of noteworthy DE related frameworks and tooling I've experience in Airflow, dbt, PySpark, etc. I have done some quick personal projects using LlamaIndex too (e.g., text-to-SQL, video transcript summarizer). I've also built CLI tooling for my team/myself, though not always in the context of data engineering.
      • Some infrastructure experience, mainly with containerization using Docker, and to a lesser extent, Podman.
      • Finally for the rest of the miscellaneous items: I am familiar and/or have worked with teams using git, unit testing, in your typical agile environment.
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
      • No, I haven't.
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?

      • I don't have any in particular. Though as a random aside, I am always baffled why almost every place seemingly uses a different platform, forcing you to juggle between so many different apps (Discord, Slack, Telegram, Matrix/Element, etc.).

Even in real life, it's always a hassle trying to keep in touch with people when they all use slight different stuff like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, KakaoTalk, among many others, even though we all have phones and can just text message. Anyway, that's it for my soapboxing!

    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?

      • No, I have not.
    • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
      • Anywhere between 5-10 hours, sometimes going over 15, sounds good to me.

Whew, that ended up being a lot. Looking forward to getting more involved and contributing - thanks!
