#134 Welcome to Fedora @chish
Opened by lochipi. Modified

Welcome

Hello @chish! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

So, I am a student currently in High School. I have been participating in multiple events of Hack Club, a Non-Profit Teenager Organization. Before starting out there I was a little nervous about starting to work in such Huge Open Source environments... But since collaborating with like minded teenagers. I have been more confident into starting to help out in the organizations I love.
I have been using Fedora Linux KDE Spin for more than a year now and I love it soo much that I can't explain lol. And thinking that this thing is Free and even I can contribute to it made me join this community.
I have never actually contributed in any Organizations, but I have built some projects during hack club events(I also got a laptop from an event there) which finally made me realize I can work in communities.
I also want to stop using AI but I could never get a reliable mentor. So I see Fedora community as my mentor to develop my skills and build something really beautiful for everyone!

I imagine my place like jack marston who is learning from his ideals that are fighting against the corporate and proprietary world lol. And one day continue the legacy with everyone.

Well I think my main skills are in the software development part. I have written some APIs and CLIs in Golang and Python. I have been actively learning Rust (to build a dream OS with my friends) and C++ (to contribute in Core of KDE, Fedora and similar projects, which is why I need some mentor to guide) I have worked a lot with FastAPI in Python, and some Spring Boot work in high school. I recently started web dev using Svelte. I am afraid I am not really skilled with higher grade infrastructure and testing.

I haven't really used mailing lists before but now as I am organizing a game jam event by hack club named campfire, I am trying to get around it too, Fedora community will be really helpful to help me learn the Mailing list.
I mostly use Slack for real time chat and sometimes discord to catch up with my friends. But recently to communicate with Fedora I started using Element and it's really so good and works really well on Mobile phones too!
I have never helped moderating forums tbh.

I can see myself volunteer for at least 2 hours a day... SO I guess 14 hours/week?

I guess that's all from my side. I would be really happy to start working with y'all as soon as possible :D

Welcome Chinmay!

Great to have you here=2E
The first thing to do to stop using AI is to follow the links and referenc=
es it provides to cross-check and verify the info=2E
Most of us here grew up preAI and our tutors were manuals, documentation, =
web-pages, search engines and as you have found - great communities like th=
is to chat with=2E

I don't think we so much fight corporations as work with the productive an=
d foward looking ones=2E Yes, I'm against the large Sloth, but there is no=
gun-slinging, just a lot of friendly people offering better, if more diffi=
cult, pathways foward ;)

Check out also Upstream projects=2E Fedora relies on software from many o=
ther places to make it what it is=2E We don't develop much software in hou=
se as such=2E

Consider learning 'packaging'=2E Putting software you want into Fedora=
=2E

Join any Matrix channels you are interested in, and any mailing lists you =
like=2E

Really awesome to have you here, let us know if we can do anything for you=
=2E

Cheers,
MatH

Thanks for replying so quickly! I will make sure I learn packaging for Fedora. Which Upstream projects would you suggest for a beginner like me?? Where I cann have some Easyfix or good for beginners types of issue. I will start communicating more in Matrix community. I also heard Fedora is in GSoC orgs. What parts of development is fedora more focused in during GSoC?? I would like to develop a nice resume while also helping this community.
I hate how some Social media influencers and marketers have made GSoC a rat race, where you "CRACK" this competition with some power prompts lol. I want to break away from this circle and learn from smart sloths

I don't know which upstream projects, start with what you yourself use and =
see if the communities there are friendly=2E

Each year Fedora has a different focus fot GSoC=2E I don't think it has b=
een announced for this year=2E Browse Matrix, there is a GSoC mentor chann=
el and maybe some more=2E As you have identified, there are no magic bulle=
ts to 'crack' the code=2E The only two ways in are raw talent and communit=
y commitment=2E

Resumes come from doing and long-term commitment=2E There is no rush, for=
now learning about the broad communities will give you the insight to make=
choices that fit well with you=2E

Cheers,
MatH
