Hello @alimashally! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
Hello all, I am Ali Mashally, and I am pleased to introduce myself to the community of the Fedora Project. As a Software Engineer who is interested in open-source, I am excited to learn, contribute, and interact with all of you. My main area of interest is web development encompassing front-end as well as back-end technologies. I have a good experience in developing different web applications, ranging from e-commerce websites to learning portals, on various frameworks and programming languages. Besides web development, my real interest lies in kernel development. I am actively working on this interest by developing a personal project in which I have implemented a simple operating system mimicking the boot process ( https://github.com/blackaly/os_simulations/tree/main/os). This project has also significantly increased my knowledge of how operating systems work at a core level. I feel this intense interest in operating system core is highly aligned with Fedora's innovative culture. I am looking forward to getting to know other contributors, learning from them, and jumping into the interesting work here.
(How I came to learn about the Fedora Project): I came to learn about the Fedora Project mostly from my friend and due to my interest in Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) ecosystems and my continuous curiosity about Linux distributions. I have always been impressed by Fedora's innovation bent and its pioneering effort at advancing the open-source frontier, particularly its efforts upstream. It was only logical to find out how I could contribute significantly to such a crucial project.
(Get to know each other better): A bit more information to get to know me and my vision for my contributions:
Although I've been using FOSS for some time now and have utilized many open-source frameworks and tools in my work, this will be my initial dedicated and active involvement with a FOSS community such as Fedora. I'm also looking forward to the collaboration and being able to learn from veteran contributors. I imagine my place in a FOSS community as an active and supportive contributor. I aim to start by understanding the processes, contributing to areas where my current skills are most relevant (e.g. testing, or specific development tasks if they align with my expertise), and then gradually expanding my contributions as I gain more insight into the project's needs. My ultimate goal is to contribute to kernel-related aspects as my understanding deepens.
My background/skills: *Operating Systems": Yes, GNU/Linux is my main operating system. I use it daily for development and personal use. While I've explored various distributions, I'm particularly drawn to Fedora's cutting-edge nature and its strong community. * Software Development Related: * Command Line: I am proficient in using the command line for various development and system administration tasks. * Version Control: I primarily use Git for version control, both individually and in collaborative team environments. * Programming Languages/Frameworks/Utilities: My core programming languages include C/C++, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript have strong experience with web frameworks like Angular, Vue.js and various back-end frameworks.
Testing: I have experience in writing unit and integration tests for software application.
Infrastructure/Sysadmin: I have foundational knowledge in system administration, particularly related to web server configurations and deployment. * Other skills: While my core focus is software development, I have some basic understanding of design principles from my web development work. * My experience in communication platforms: * Mailing Lists: While I haven't actively participated in FOSS-specific mailing lists before, I am familiar with their functionality and comfortable engaging in discussions via email.
Preferred Real-time Chat Platform: I'm generally comfortable with common real-time chat platforms like Matrix (Element), IRC, or Discord, and I'm adaptable to whichever platform the community primarily uses.
Forum Moderating/Administering: I have not actively helped with moderating or administering forums in the past.
How much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week): I am looking to dedicate approximately 5-10 hours per week to volunteering with the Fedora Project. I believe this allows for consistent contribution while also balancing my other commitments.
Thank you, Ali.

Hey @alimashally, thanks for dropping your introduction here. It seems that Fedora Infrastructure might be a great starting point for you. Here are some documentation that would point you to channels where you can get started with introducing yourself https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/infra/ and https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/infra/day_to_day_fedora/.
Please do not be disheartened if you do not immediately get something to work on. Just hang around with the folks and strike conversations to understand how they do things. There are a bunch of things to learn and bunch of friends to make in Fedora Project. Please feel free to catalog your progress over here and as always, do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions.
