#85 Welcome to Fedora @samuelcooper2015!
Opened by ankursinha. Modified

Welcome

Hello @samuelcooper2015 ! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

This is my first time participating in Floss and I imagine my place in FOSS
as a connector , organizer , and collaborator helping everyone to reach a
common goal to advance the FOSS community.

My background is in project management , Agile , and software development.
I would like to focus my skills on Agile and seeing how Agile can be
      applied to open source communities.
My main OS that I use is MAC OS , but I am planning on dual booting my
macbook with Fedora. I have used Ubuntu before , but I am new to Fedora.
My non software development skills include things such as budgeting ,
creating schedules, Agile coaching , and I have utlized tools such as Jira
, Confluence , Wrike , MS Project , MS office suite , Google Analytics ,
and MS Teams for my project management and Scrum Master work.
My Software development tools that I have used are The command line , GIT,
Bitbucket , Visual Studio , Visual Studio Code, Angular Framework ,
Typescript , CSS, HTML , C# , Azure DevOps , Cypress testing , and Python.
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before? Yes
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform? WhatsAPP , Discord ,
and Slack are all tools I like to use but I am open.
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums? Yes
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering
(approximate hours per week)? The amount I can do is 5 - 10hrs per week
that I can commit to , but possibly can do more depending on the task and
    timing.

Hi @samuelcooper2015 : I just noticed that I'd closed this ticket soon after opening it, but I think that may have been in error (I can't see why we'd have closed this). Really sorry for that.

How are you doing? What can we help with?

If this was meant to be closed, please let us know and we'll make a note of it here. I'll reopen this for the moment.

No problem, I am doing well! I am new to this community and wanted to see
ways I could get involved. I wanted to utilize my scrum master and project
manager skills and see ways to network within the open source community.
Thank you for opening my ticket back up!

No worries at all.

All the teams in Fedora do some "project management", but I don't reckon it's as formal as in industry settings given that most people are volunteers and things happen when people can do them. None of the teams that I'm in use things like sprints simply because we're all so spread out and working at different times that having a sprint meeting and so on is quite difficult. We do use kanban quite a bit though and that'll work for most teams.

The commops team could perhaps be a good start?

The description of the ticket here has a few links that will give you an overall view of Fedora too. I'd have a look at the org chart for example:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/orgchart/

Please do let us know if we can help with anything at all.

I've added some interest tags to the ticket, please feel free to edit them as you see fit.
