#93 Welcome to Fedora @vestacord

Welcome

Hello @vestacord! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hi,

I've gone through the above links :)

How do I sign the FPCA? I don't see it in agreements on my Fedora account.

IceBreaker Questions

your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

### have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?

I have made some PR requests that were merged before, but nothing major. I am contemplating applying to GSOC if I have free time.

how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?

I specifically want to work on making technologies more accessible to the wider public, such that not just nerds, but members of public will be inclined to support infrastructure that respects users and their privacy.

your background/skills, for example:

community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism

Not much, some local activsm, replying various forum posts in my free time or stackexchange. Been a jr dev team member for OBC engineering.

System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)

popos / ubuntu since 2019, fedora since 2023 :) (A much more pleasant experience)

non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency

English, Chinese, French speaker.

software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin

I am currently a controls engineer and studying SWE at school.
ok: git, agile, tdd/ bdd, c, basic ts ts py and c++, sysadmin (systemd, networking, vms, ok with libc and utils-linux) dokcer/podman
not ok: orchestration and cicd, hg/svn, packaging, web dev

your experience in communication platforms:

have you used mailing lists before?

yes

what is your preferred real time chat platform?

WhatsApp > Discord > Matrix > IRC

have you helped with moderating/administering forums?

Nope

how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

2-5 hours dedicated time. (Excl reading and replying messages, email, forum etc).

How do I sign the FPCA? I don't see it in agreements on my Fedora account.

That's odd---I do see it in mine. It's in "edit profile" -> agreements. Is it not there, could you share a screenshot with any personal information removed (it's possible that the UI has changed since I did this quite a while ago)

@ankursinha Hi, it is there now and it wasn't when I wrote that comment. Perhaps it took awhile to appear haha.
I signed it already!

That's amazing, please let us know if there's anything else we can help with.

@ankursinha Sure! I'd appreciate if you could point me towards where I'd be most useful.

To summarize my skills: The professional work I've done in IT has comprised of controls engineering and sysadmin, and minimal SWE, including work on OBC. I haven't worked on anything large enough that had a CICD pipeline, only basic VCS and SOP such as Satellite AIT. For the past few months, I have been training for OSCP and SANS GIAC certifications.

Looking around the subgroup, my interests are in cybersecurity (CoreOS, Infrastructure), documentation, and outreach (Ask Fedora, Discussion, Outreachy).

All of these would be great places to start. I'd join the channels for the team (either the mailing list, matrix, or on discussion.fp.o since we're spread over these three) and see what's going on. That helps meet the people and see what is currently worked on and what you find interesting enough to do.

I spend a bit of time on Ask Fedora/Discussion every day myself---so much to learn, and so much going on all over Fedora all the time!

Hi Sinha, I'm already on all 3 of those platforms, do you know which place / people / SIG specifically I can ask for a focus on entry-level cybersecurity or documentation work? thank you :)

The docs group on Matrix is active=2E
Perhaps you could check the current firewall config guides and simple Fedo=
ra security practices, and update them if needed=2E =20

Cheers,

Should I close this issue?

It's up to you really. We usually wait until people feel they are
comfortable enough (perhaps they've even made a few contributions)
before we close the ticket. The ticket remains a "point of contact" in
the meantime.

Hi @vestacord : how are you doing? What can we help with?

The security SIG lives here (but I'm not a security person so i don't quite know what they are working on): https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Security
