Hello @im-jking! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
I replied to this on the email list! The full introduction is pasted below.
"Hello!
My name is Ian, I'm an early-career computer scientist and am very interested in getting more involved in the FOSS community. I love software engineering of all kinds, from machine code to frontend, but am most experienced in C, React/TypeScript, Python, and a bit of Rust. I'm open to just about any contributions I can make - I would love to write some code, but also enjoy documentation and video production. I learned about the Fedora project from a classmate and have been daily-driving it for the past six months or so.
I haven't participated in the FOSS community for long, but have long been appreciative of it. I'd like to better contribute through my technical experience and learn alongside other community members. I'm experienced in most software engineering fundamentals (Git, Linux CLI, coding and testing) as well as some more specific areas (AI/Data Analytics, API development and usage, networking and network security). My preferred real-time chat platform is Discord or Matrix. I'm only able to commit to about 3-5 hours/week on this project as I feel out my general availability, but that may increase or decrease with time.
Excited to get involved, Ian"
Hi @im-jking : how are you doing?
There's a lot of software development in Fedora. A lot of it is related to maintaining packages---so building, testing, and so on
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/package-maintainers/Joining_the_Package_Maintainers/
The community also builds lots of infrastructure to do all of this, so that's another avenue to look at.
Of course, supporting users, for example on Ask Fedora and outreach/tutorials and so on are more user-facing tasks that we do to.
If we can help with anything, please do let us know.
