#322 Cant open KDE Wayland session, $DISPLAY is not set
Closed: Won't fix by marcdeop. Opened by boredsquirrel.

I was browsing normally and suddenly KDE crashed. Black screen with cursor, no output, I could write stuff there. After some seconds SDDM appears and I try to log in but get thrown out. I repeat, the same.

startx works, so its a Wayland problem.

I use fish, but tried switching to bash first, same result.

entering startplasma-wayland give me this:

>startkde
Error: could not determine $DISPLAY.
Error: Can not contacr kdeinit5!
org.kde.startup: "kdeinit5_shutdown" () exited with code 255
startplasma-wayland: Shutting down...
startplasmacompositor: Shutting down...
startplasmacompositor: Done.
>kdeinit5
kdeinit5: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
>$DISPLAY
fish: The expanded Command was empty
>wayland-info
failed to create display: No such file or directory

OS: Fedora Kinoite 37.20230321 (updated today in the X session)
Laptop: Intel x64 with iGPU pretty old

Updates: XSession works pretty normal, VLC works again, but I cant set the display brightness. This is something with the display.

How can this even happen on Kinoite? Should I remove all overlays?

Another unusual new bug: I cant update some Flatpaks and rpm-ostree as user (wheel group), I get

error: rpmostreed OS operation Upgrade not allowed for user

I also switched shell back to bash.

I removed many overlays, among them vnc-server which may cause issues as its X11-only

Does this happen with a newly created user?

Anyway...

Please, use our bugzilla to report issues. Thanks. :-)
