Hi, @rlengland. I am Roseline Bassey, an Outreachy applicant. I want to express my interest in this ticket. Can I be assigned to work on this article?

roseline-bassey commented

After reviewing the compiled changes for the F40 Workstation, I've curated a list of items to spotlight in the article. Before proceeding, I would like to confirm if this list meets the expectations for the article's content.

Changes and Fixes:
1. Golang1.22: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/golang1.22
2. java-21-openjdk as the system JDK in F40: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Java21
3. Changes/Ruby 3.3: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Ruby_3.3
4. Removing OpenSSL 1.1 package: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/RemoveOpensslCompat
5. Changes/F40Boost183: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/F40Boost183

New Items:
6. Fedora Workstation Image Builder: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FedoraWorkstationImageBuilder
7. Changes/KDE_Plasma_6: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/KDE_Plasma_6
8. Porting to Modern C: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/PortingToModernC

Please let me know if there’s any specific item to be added or removed from this list.

@aday Can I request that you weigh in on the proposal for this article? It would appear that some of the items may not be appropriate or of limited interest such as KDE, Image Builder, and perhaps programming language updates.

Any suggestions or resources that might be available would be very welcomed.

We want to make certain we present the new release in the best way possible.

Thanks.

Hi @rlengland, I hope you're well. Could I be assigned the design aspect of this issue? Also, how many variations of the design would be required?

@obazeeconsole I'm not clear about what you mean by the "design aspect". Can you clarify, please?

@obazeeconsole I'm not clear about what you mean by the "design aspect". Can you clarify, please?

Apologies for any confusion. By 'design aspect,' I was referring to the image and graphics components of the issue. Could I be assigned to handle those elements, and if so, how many variations of the design would be required?

@obazeeconsole There is only a single image associated with this Fedora Magazine article and that is the "feature image". You can see examples in the magazine archive:
https://fedoramagazine.org/?s=What%27s+new

The image needs to consist of a standard image logo/text on the new background for the
F40 release. Note that in the archive in the link above you will see some image that do NOT conform to the standard. Ignore them, please.

The logo/text is located here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Edition-workstation-full_one-color_white.png
You will have to locate the start up background for the F40 Workstation release.

The image needs to be a jpeg 1890x800 pixels in size and can be attached to this ticket when completed. The editors will take care of placing on the document in Word Press.

Hey @rlengland,

I've completed the image design for the Fedora Magazine article. Here's the final look attached below. If there are any changes or adjustments you'd like me to make, please let me know.

Thanks!

One more thing @rlengland, I'm trying to submit a pull request to notify the Magazine team that the image is ready for review. However, I'm encountering a (404) error, stating that no pull requests are allowed on this project. Could you please guide me on how to proceed from here?

The image looks great. Thank you.

I honestly don't recall what is necessary to provide access to the Pagure repo for the images (https://pagure.io/fedoramagazine-images). I assume that is where the pull request attempt is occurring and that you forked the repo etc. The only thing I recall is the need to use my FAS login.

But...I wouldn't worry about checking it in to the repo unless you happened to have an SVG version. If you do, attach it to the ticket and I'll add it to the repo. But don't create one just for the repo. We have the JPG image on the ticket and I can use that on the WordPress document.

Metadata Update from @rlengland:
- Issue untagged with: needs-image
- Issue assigned to roseline-bassey

@roseline-bassey I've assigned this article to you so go ahead and get started. I've asked @aday to look at your proposal and propose any changes. Take a look at my message to him about items that may not be necessary and note that he may have other resources or items that he wants emphasized.

WordPress for the magazine can be accessed here: https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/ Log in with your FAS account and select the +New link in the top banner then Post from the pulldown menu to get started.

Let us know if you have questions.

Thanks for your approval, @rlengland. I will start working on the article.

Hi @roseline-bassey , I'm a member of the Fedora Workstation Working Group and I usually act as a liaison for the "what's new in Fedora Workstation" magazine articles.

Our goal for these articles is to focus on the changes which are interesting for our users - things that they will encounter as part of using Fedora Workstation, or new features that they might want to learn about and check out. We tend to focus on the out of the box desktop experience, since that is primarily what Fedora Workstation is about.

If you haven't already, you might want to check out recent "what's new" articles, so you can get an idea:

  • https://fedoramagazine.org/whats-new-fedora-workstation-38/
  • https://fedoramagazine.org/whats-new-fedora-workstation-37/

In terms of generating the list of topics to cover, the GNOME 46 release notes will be available soon and will provide some topics. I can also ask the workstation working group for information on relevant changes.

roseline-bassey commented

Thank you for explaining the goals of the article. I would like to request that you reach out to the workstation WG for information on relevant changes to the Fedora Workstation. If possible, could you please tag a member of the workstation WG so I can follow up directly?
As GNOME 46 release notes are yet to be available, I'll continue to review past articles to gather ideas for the current article. @aday

roseline-bassey commented

Hi, @rlengland, I'm sharing the first draft of the article for your review. Please kindly share your feedback on this for further improvement. It is accessible at: https://fedoramagazine.org/?p=39923&preview=true&preview_id=39923

This article is still a work in progress as I have not yet covered the changes in F40. I hope to gather ideas on what to include in the "Under the Hood Changes in Fedora 40" section of the draft once the F40 Beta release article is available. But, any help to point me to resources or information on the relevant changes to include in this section is welcome.

Metadata Update from @rlengland:
- Custom field preview-link adjusted to https://fedoramagazine.org/?p=39923&preview=true&preview_id=39923

@roseline-bassey the first paragraph in the "GNOME 46" section provides the same information as that in the bullet items that follow. I would suggest trimming it down, perhaps making it a more general comment about the types of changes rather than the specifics.

Also note that we try to make links open on a new page. I've changed them but take a look at the setting by selecting one while in the editor. Also note the "Read More" item after the introduction. Your intro is set up to lead the reader to the rest of the article so I see no changes there, at this point. I'm just pointing it out for future reference.

The Fedora Workstation image placement should not be in the document itself. It needs to be set using the "Featured image" section in the right column in the editor. You have to scroll down a ways to find the "Set featured image" location. When you select that you will need to upload the image to the media section and then assign it as the image for the article. If you select the "Set featured image" "button" and it looks like you need some assistance or more details, let us know. When the image is set, remove it from the article itself.

roseline-bassey commented

I acknowledge your feedback. I will work on improving those areas you've pointed out.

roseline-bassey commented

I have improved the article and completed it, @rlengland. Please take a look when you have a moment.

I did an edit pass on your article. I modified some sentences that repeated some phrases/words several times and rephrased some items. It looks pretty good.

Other than that I think we should have @aday do a review to see if he would like to add, change, or elaborate on anything.

Thanks for your effort!

roseline-bassey commented

Great! Thanks for editing the article. I will be on the lookout for any feedback from @aday.

Metadata Update from @rlengland:
- Custom field publish adjusted to 2024-04-23 (was: 2024-04-16)

@aday We have an extra week before F40 final release. Do you have anything further to add or any corrections you feel are necessary?

Thanks for the ping, @rlengland . I've reviewed the article and have some comments/corrections:

  • "flag-ship" should be "flagship"
  • "open-source" shouldn't be hyphenated
  • repeated exclamation marks in the opening paragraph feel a bit too much
  • the sentence "This article describes some of the major user-facing changes in Fedora Workstation 40." doesn't fit in the paragraph - it reads awkwardly
  • "This new version contains several enhancements to the Fedora Workstation." is an odd phrasing - GNOME is part of workstation, to doesn't do things to it. Also it's not "the Fedora Workstation" - it' just "Fedora Workstation".
  • The user-facing name of the "Nautilus file manager" is "Files" - the latter is the preferred term
  • The GNOME 46 section doesn't make sense structurally:
    • It describes the Files changes in 3 places - the introduction, in the bullet list, and in the final closing paragraph. The bullet list items about Files don't make it clear that they are about Files.
    • The introduction includes specifics about some changes, and then switchen back into a more general mode with the line "small but significant improvements to the GNOME system" which makes it hard to follow.
    • The line "For more details, check out the GNOME 46 release notes." feels like it belongs at the end of the section.
  • "settings App" should be "Settings app"
  • Files and Settings are core GNOME apps, but they're not covered in the core apps section - confusing.
  • "functionalities" isn't a word I'd expect to be used to describe new features
  • VRR is an experimental feature only, which must be enabled from the command line. It is important to flag this, if it is mentioned.
  • Replacing Cheese with Snapshot isn't an under the hood change - it's user visible
  • "NetworkManager is enabled by default in Fedora Linux 40" is incorrect - NetworkManager has been enabled since forever. I assume that a specific NetworkManager feature is being referred to here?

Thanks again - I'd be happy to review subsequent drafts.

roseline-bassey commented

Thanks for reviewing the article @aday. I’ll leave a comment after addressing all corrections.

roseline-bassey commented

I have modified the article as requested and It's pending review. Please review the draft again when you have a moment @aday.

@aday we are getting close to crunch time and there are 4 articles for F40 release. If this one needs any further work we will need to know about soon?

Thanks @rlengland . The new version looks much better. The main outstanding issues are factual:

  • "An extra modifier has been added to the app window shortcut. It lets you quickly launch a new window for an app in the dash using: Super+Ctrl+." This is incorrect. See the GNOME 46 release notes for details of the actual new shortcut (sentence starting "New app window shortcut").
  • "By default, Tap to Click is now enabled for touchscreen devices." Tap to click is a touch pad feature, not touchscreen.
  • "You can connect remotely to a GNOME system through the RDP protocol, provided no one else is connected." This isn't quite correct either. You can connect using RDP, either to join an existing desktop session (the old feature), or using a new dedicated session when there isn't an active session (the new feature for 46).
  • "A new progress indicator appears at the bottom of the sidebar, making it possible to monitor file operations." You could monitor file operations previously. The change in 46 is that the presentation of the information has been changed, to be more detailed.
roseline-bassey commented

Thanks for reviewing and ensuring the article is clear and accurate. I have made the corrections you pointed out. Please review them once more. Thank you, @aday

@rlengland, could we add screenshots or GIFs to the body of the article, just as in past articles, to make it more readable?

Screen shots are fine. Once you have them as GIFs, upload them the the media library
https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/upload.php
and insert them from there.

Just so you know, @roseline-bassey If your screen shots are not in the article by 1400UTC on 23 April (Tuesday) we will go with what you have at that time. I will publish the article manually close to that time ( or slightly after :-) )

Other than the potential screenshot additions, I believe this article is ready for publication.

roseline-bassey commented

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the screenshots ready at the time. But, I guess the article is good as it is.
