#308 FYI: Intending to publish a Pre-FLOCK post to announce the new website
Closed: published by rlengland. Opened by moralcode.

Hello Fedora magazine team!

Over the past few weeks ive being working on redesigning the site for FLOCK to better align with the new design of the Fedora project main website
I'm hoping to have these changes published by early this week with a redirect from the current flocktofedora.org domain name so that attendees can see them in advance of the conference.

I would like to get a fedora magazine article published soon after this change to announce the new website and hopefully drive some interest in the conference as well as announce it too.

i wanted to create this issue as a heads up to ensure the team has adequate lead time and is not blindsided by this plan - i'm planning to work on drafting at least an outline of the content by monday or tuesday next week at the latest. and we'll probably work with @jflory7 to finalize the content.

@glb, I know you already know quite a bit about this project. :grinning:

Ideal publish date for the Fedora Magazine would be Tuesday, 6 August or Wednesday, 7 August. I would meet @moralcode in-person in Rochester next Monday. We would have a chance to review this article together there and then I come up with a featured image and schedule the post. This article would be assembled very close to publishing, but I can work with @moralcode to give it a full pass and cover the usual pre-editing checks.

Is this plan okay with the editors?

I've augmented this issue with the appropriate tags and owner (@moralcode) and indicated a publishing date of 7 August which is a normal publishing date for the Magazine. If you want to use the 6th we can accommodate that.

Any suggestions or contributions for a featured image would be appreciated in advance.

In reviewing the content with me, justin suggested using this as a featured image: https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/flock-2024.jpg (can reuse from the media library and not reupload)

@moralcode Is this ready for a review by the editor?

I believe so, yes.
Justin an I already went through the content in a google doc and i made some additional edits to try and satisfy the requirements of the readability plugin on wordpress - its about as polished as I think I can get it, so some attention from the editing team would probably be helpful

... what the heck ok i did NOT update that metadata - i think pagure glitched

Small edit im retroactively realizing i should make (but dont want to interfere with any editors who are on the doc): If the length of the "Our Process: How did we get here?" section is too long, the couple paragraphs of thank yous at the end of it could maybe become a new section

i did NOT update that metadata - i think pagure glitched

Yes, Pagure is known to be glitchy that way. Don't worry about it. 🙂

I ... don't want to interfere with any editors ...

WordPress will notify you (and refuse to let you edit) if a document is being actively edited by another user. Go ahead and make whatever changes you want.

How strict is this timeline? I've been sorta hoping to get this magazine post out as soon as reasonable so that there's a little bit of lead time before the conference for people to read it and potentially decide to register for Flock after taking a look. No worries if its pretty strict but just wanted to let people know what I originally had in mind

Yeah i think Richard already got to it before i thought of that

@moralcode Sorry if I excluded you from editing. I've backed out of the article now. I made some changes to improve the readability. I'll stay away until I get a "all clear" from you.

@moralcode let us know what date you would prefer. We usually publish on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but that isn't a requirement if another date is better for you. Let us know what you would like.
