#11 Prepare blurbs for "Fedora fun projects" rotation on fp.o
Closed: Fixed None Opened 15 years ago by pfrields.

These blurbs would include fun things anyone can do with Fedora. An example is shown at http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/woot/page1.png called "Turn your friends into the Hulk." The work consists of:

  • A title and a short explanation of a few sentences, in plain, simple language anyone can understand. The task ''must'' be something anyone can do in a default Fedora Live image. No yum installs allowed!
  • A thumbnail graphic that shows the results -- if applicable (and it usually should be)
  • A wiki page, called "How to ..." and categorized under [[Category:Fun projects]], that explains step-by-step how to achieve the end result.

Let's aim for 6 fun projects. We have ideas for 3 of them, Marty you'll have to come up with 3 more.

1) Turn your friends into the hulk! (uses cheese)
2) Vectorize your friends! (uses inkscape bitmap trace)
3) Pick out your favorite constellations! (uses stellarium or one of the other star watching apps)

Okay scratch that, try to go with stuff that comes default on the Live Media for Desktop. Here's the URL to the latest Live Media:

Cheese should be on there so the Hulk project will still work. Another idea - gthumb has some image editing capabilities, eg. red eye removal and some effects.

I think Mo is right, and that it might be too difficult to stick with just what's on the standard Live image. We ''can'' venture outside, and give information on installing a specific package using the graphical Add/Remove Software tool. But here are some ideas for things in the Live media already:

  • Chat with your friends using Empathy (works with MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk, and others)
  • Explore free music with Rhythmbox (Jamendo and Magnatune)
  • Discover fun videos at Dailymotion.com (works out of the box using free Web standard formats)
  • Attach a camera and use gThumb to eliminate red-eye, or show some other specific enhancement

Some fun stuff you could add software for:

  • I think stellarium is a great idea.
  • Little kids love TuxPaint and gcompris.

Ping - what's the status on this? Anything we can do to help? It would be great to have this as some of the first content to go up on FI!

Martin is back in gear and working on this. Hurrah!

Ping - Martin, what's the status on this? We've got a bit over two weeks until launch - anything we can do to help? (I've seen you talking about this on IRC so I know stuff is happening, just wondering if there's anything we can do that'd make this easier for you, as I recall you had to spend quite a bit of time on setup...)

dufflebag still active? May need to reassign. (Martin, please tell us if you're still interested in working on this!) Bumping to F14.

This appears to be done years ago. But now we still feature obsolete content.
Please, help the websites team to update it!

We have just dropped the entries from the index as it shows screenshots of GNOME 2.X...
But As soon as we get new content, we will add it back. (commit 69ca7a7)

obsolete now that we move to Fedora.next.
