GNOME is switching from gedit to gnome-text-editor as its default text editor: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-build-meta/-/merge_requests/1321
I think that it would be good for Fedora to make the same change in the default install. gnome-text-editor is generally nicer and there are issues around gedit maintenance.
The first step is to get gnome-text-editor packaged. Any volunteers?!
And after having a package, we should get a Fedora Flatpak out of this package so we can ship gnome-text-editor in Silverblue too.

I'll create the RPM. Someone else can create the Flatpak afterward.

Package review request:
gnome-text-editor
gtksourceview5
Thank you, Neal!
I will create the Flatpak once the package is in.
GNOME Text Editor is now stuck in limbo because my review request for gtksourceview5 was closed in favor of a new contributor that seems to not be responding to NEEDINFO. What do we do now?
I believe Amanda is planning to update her package submission.

Amanda is planning on responding to the review feedback. I have reached out to her and offered to help out. In theory, this should be coming along Real Soon Now.

This is now in Rawhide. The only thing left to do is swap gedit for gnome-text-editor in comps.
gedit
Awesome, thank you! Is it possible to get F35 packages for testing?
gtksourceview5 needs to be branched for F35 for me to do that.
gnome-text-editor is now available in F35: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2022-ba9be138fe

Do we have someone lined up to do this?

I volunteered to make the Fedora Flatpak, but now I'm blocked on an issue with fedmod (the tool we use for making Fedora Flatpaks) being deprecated and not working properly. I asked Owen how to go about it.
fedmod
@aday I will do that once Felipe is unblocked and finishes the Flatpak.
gedit was actually listed specifically in the Workstation technical specification. I went ahead and changed it to gnome-text-editor. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Workstation/Technical_Specification#Text_Editor

I did today a successful fedora flatpak build for gnome-text-editor and requested a repository https://pagure.io/releng/fedora-scm-requests/issue/41311
After that is done, I can proceed to import, build, and finally send a Bodhi update.
The Fedora Flatpak update for gnome-text-editor is now waiting for karma points to reach testing.
Please visit https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-FLATPAK-2022-8dbf809fe5, follow the testing instructions, and give us +1 karma if it works for you. :)
@adamwill opened https://pagure.io/pungi-fedora/pull-request/1069, but we have to wait until the bodhi update will be pushed to stable.
The Silverblue change is in. Marking the issue as resolved.
