#376 Anaconda Web UI requirement clarification: Enable users to have separate /home partition
Closed: Won't fix a year ago by jkonecny. Opened a year ago by jkonecny.

As we presented to you we already have an idea for improvements for the current Web UI. This issue is about:

Enable users to have a separate /home partition based on their preference.

Our proposal:

The idea is simple. Give users a possibility to choose if they want or not /home as separate subvolume or as part of the / (root) subvolume. We would like to implement this but we are not sure about priorities so we can focus on what is most important to you.

Questions:

  • Do the Workstation SIG want to enable users to have separate /home subvolume or you are fine with going with the default and creating the /home subvolume by default.

Could we please get this answered or proposed on a meeting?

Is the context automatic or custom partitioning? If automatic/default/simple partitioning, always create a separate /home and do not present a UI for changing it. Same as now.

I think the advantage of combined /home with / suggests standard partitions. The gotcha though is it gets confusing/less predictable when the behavior changes depending on the partition scheme. So I'm still inclined to say /home and / should be separate.

If the context is custom/manual partitioning, I have no objection to this UI appearing in a later version. Encourage or default to creating /home but permit installation without it.

The context is our new Guided partitioning. To put it simple it's extended automatic partitioning guiding users with more customization.

The Workstation SIG is fine with not delivering this feature to Fedora Workstation. They would maybe even want to hide the option for Fedora Workstation when it's delivered later.

Was discussed in todays Workstation WG meeting

Was discussed in todays Workstation WG meeting

Conclusion was that, as far as the WG is concerned, separate /home is highly desirable but not a hard requirement for the installer.

Referring to the LVM and partition case right? Because the separate subvolume for Btrfs is kind of critical to being able to enable reusing /home with installs and doesn't have any negative space impacts.

For clarification. We will create /home as separate subvolume by default. This change is about enabling users to not create a separate subvolume if they desire.

For that reason I don't think this is something Workstation SIG would like to have. In Workstation case it's not a good practice to avoid having /home as part of the root subvolume.

Okay, great, thanks!
