#379 Slow drive cause: "timed out waiting for device" session kicks
Closed: Deferred to upstream a year ago by catanzaro. Opened a year ago by tghw433sdf.

I have a slow HDD which use to backup stuff. Its luks encrypted and the performance is not bad but it sometimes it has some small delays and this is causing session kicks / its rendering the hole os useless until i force reboot.

In the logs i see: "Timed out waiting for device dev-disk-by\ uuid numbers.......device

Describe what you would like us to do:

Accept more slow responses from drives. I dont know if its the I/O squealer. / luks / something in gnome 43/44. It causes gnome-text-editor to cause the crashes, its crashing sometimes randomly when copying a lot of files (which is terrible for handling a backup drive) only using cli tools to edit files did not result in crashes. Ffmpeg usage resulted at random crashes.
Screen gets black and the system becomes unusable in all cases

Using fedora 38 workstation

When do you need this to be done by? (YYYY/MM/DD)

ASAP

Hi, I'm afraid this is outside the scope of what Workstation WG can help with. You'll need to track down which components are responsible for doing synchronous I/O and report bugs against them. I'm afraid many places in GNOME likely improperly assume that your disk is fast. Good luck....
