#457 The "install icon in Activities"
Closed: Fixed by catanzaro. Opened by hasshu.

The "Activities" button has been replaced with an unlabelled workspace indicator in GNOME 45, but fedora-welcome still mentions "using the install icon in Activities". This is bound to confuse new users.

Instead, the welcome dialog could suggest looking for the installer in the overview reachable via the top-left corner of the screen (or with the left Super/Windows key). Might also display the ripple animation in the said corner, while the welcome window has focus (and the overview isn't shown).

Incidentally, perhaps there's a more appropriate place to report this issue? If so, don't hesitate to let me know.

This is a good enough issue tracker. Looks like we're just behind on triaging issue reports.

Adrian found the code here. Apparently it's part of anaconda.

First I wondered: what is the new name of the activities overview? Then again, since this program is also used for other Fedora spins, referencing GNOME-specific UI doesn't seem good.

Proposed new text: "Installation can be started at any time by launching the Welcome to Fedora app."

@catanzaro Thanks for the update! I think the proposed line sounds good – only, if I'm not mistaken, "Welcome to Fedora" is the name of the welcome dialog itself, while the installer is called "Install to Hard Drive" (at least on Workstation).

Oh yeah, good point!

Oh yeah, good point!

I don't think you can launch the "welcome to fedora" app in the live environment, can you?

I think making user interface message desktop agnostic is not the way forward. This basically makes user experience worse for the users of mainstream Workstation just because non-mainstream variants exist. Please don't do that. Properly designed user facing solutions should be opinionated and not generic.

Maybe instead there should be two versions of the message for both Workstation and KDE Edition and the third generic fallback otherwise. Desktop could be detected by XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP env variable.

We don't use this for KDE.

Agreed on new text: "Installation can be started at any time by launching the install app."
