#47 update target size of Workstation images
Closed 6 years ago Opened 6 years ago by kparal.

Hello,

QA is trying to consolidate target sizes for all images built by Fedora into a single document that we can easily check, in a response to one of blocking images being oversize again [1]. The document of choice is this wiki page [2]. In a newly added column, the target size of each release-blocking image will be documented. (It can also contain target sizes of non-blocking images, but our major focus is on the blocking ones, of course). The target size will be a blocker for Fedora Final releases.

The target sizes for Workstation images are currently considered [3] as follows:

Workstation Live 2 GB
Workstation netinst 700 MiB

I'd like you to think whether this is still correct, decide on new numbers if needed, and then write it down into the document [2]. (If you decide to change it in the future, notifying us at the same time is very appreciated.)

We would like to avoid the situation when the image goes oversize and the target size is simply bumped, because it adds delays to the release process. So please think ahead and choose a size that you really want to keep and block on it (You can of course also choose to have no=unlimited target size).

Since Workstation Live is currently marked as release blocking for optical media (it needs to work from a DVD), QA suggests you choose a 4.7 GB target size (single-layer single-side DVD). The current 2 GB size was chosen probably because 2 GB flash drives were common for giveaways in the past. The technology has moved on and such small sizes are probably not common anymore.

The Workstation netinst image is not blocking for optical media, but Everything netinst is, and it would probably make sense to have the target size synchronized for all netinst media. The current target size of Everything netinst is chosen to fit on a CD (we might re-evaluate that in the future).

Thank you.

4.7 GB would be inconsistent with ensuring Fedora is available for users worldwide. Let's leave the target size unchanged at 2 GB. If we ever reach that point then we're definitely going to want to sit down and reevaluate what is going into the live image. We're currently at 1.9 GB, but that's a bug and it should be decreasing soon: see https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/46#comment-504164 for more discussion on that.

We are probably not going to have any preference on the netinst target size. Feel free to change that to match whatever the Everything or Server netinstall.

do we need to keep this open ?

Nobody had updated the document, I was waiting for you. Anyway, I just updated it.
