Feral Interactive, one of the major AAA game porters for Linux released a tool that their games will try to use going forward that allows the game to switch the CPU governor used. More details can be found here: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/feral-interactive-have-released-an-open-source-tool-thatll-help-get-the-most-performance-out-of-linux-games.11555
the GameMode tool code is hosted here: https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode
I discussed this a bit with Owen Taylor and Praerit from the RH kernel team and our conclusion is that the upside to shipping this tool is probably bigger than the downside. The CPU governor in question isn't a bit of dumb one in the sense that it just sets your CPU to full blast, but it does tangibly improve performance for a lot of games since there is no CPU scaling rampup happening.
I created an initial package and filed a bug for the review: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1596293
The new packages with some (already upstreamed patches) is submitted to rawhide and an update F28.
gamemode is now in Fedora. I believe this ticket can be closed now.
