After upgrading from F28 -> F29 today, I noticed that everything is huge in plymouth:
We determined this is caused by Hans's work on flicker-free boot. The problem is my motherboard displays its startup screen in a low resolution, and plymouth now retains that resolution to avoid flicker instead of switching to the proper resolution like before. Workaround is to add fbcon=nodefer to the kernel command line.
fbcon=nodefer
This might be a hardware-specific issue: not a big deal if only a small minority of users are affected, but quite a big deal if it's a lot of users. The WG should make a decision whether to proceed or ask Hans to revert.
Upstream issue: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/plymouth/plymouth/issues/68
Hans has been working on this and I'm satisfied by the progress, so I don't think we'll need to discuss this in the WG after all. Closing.
