Update the Fedora 40 GNU Toolchain to gcc 14.0, binutils 2.41, glibc 2.39 and gdb 14.1.
The set of core GNU Toolchain packages for Fedora 40 are as follows:
GNU C Compiler 14.0 Associated runtimes for C++ (libstdc++), Go (gccgo), OpenMP (gomp), Fortran (gfortran), D (phobos), Objective C/C++. GNU Binary Utilities 2.41 GNU C Library 2.39 GNU Debugger 14.1 (immediately available in Fedora 39)
The gcc 14.0 change will be tracked in this top-level GNU Toolchain system-wide update.
The "Porting to Modern C" system-wide change requested is tracked here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/PortingToModernC
The binutils 2.41 change will be tracked in this top-level GNU Toolchain system-wide update.
The glibc 2.39 change will be tracked in this top-level GNU Toolchain system-wide update.
The gdb 14.1 update was rolled out across all Fedora releases and the move to 14+ will be handled in the same fashion. The debugger is capable of debugging the binary artifacts produced by the rest of the system toolchain.
Owners, do not implement this work until the FESCo vote has explicitly ended. The Fedora Program Manager will create a tracking bug in Bugzilla for this Change, which is your indication to proceed. See the FESCo ticket policy and the Changes policy for more information.
REMINDER: This ticket is for FESCo members to vote on the proposal. Further discussion should happen in the devel list thread linked above.
We voted on this in the 2024-01-22 meeting while discussing #3145. https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org//meeting_matrix_fedoraproject-org/2024-01-22/fesco.2024-01-22-19.30.log.txt
APPROVED (+8, 0, -0)
The mention in the meeting summary is not clear. One would have to read the full log to know that we also approved this one. We should mention it explicitly in the next summary.
Sorry, that was my unfamiliarity with the tools -- I didn't realize at first that !agreed would take free-form text.
!agreed
Yeah, sorry, this wasn't a complaint, but rather a "note to self", since I'll be doing the next weeks agenda. By next week I wouldn't remember any of that.
