#3392 Revert unapproved dropping of X11 session support in GDM in F42
Closed: Accepted a month ago by zbyszek. Opened a month ago by rathann.

I thought raising this in the mailing list would be enough to let the GDM maintainers know they need to revert the dropping of X11 session support because it was not approved for F42. Alas, it seems I was wrong. So now I'm asking FESCo to take action and have the X11 session support reinstated in GDM immediately.

It is very late to do this for Fedora 42. This change has been in effect in Rawhide / F42 for weeks (months?). Given that it has taken this long for people to start shouting, the number of affected users might not be large.

Still, I was kind of surprised too that the X11 session support was disabled in GDM downstream before it was disabled by default in upstream, and that this wasn't part of the "no more GNOME (X11) session shipped by default" Change proposal. However, if it had been part of that proposal, I think I would still have voted in favor of it ...

(It's also a bit of a stretch to call this "unapproved" - it wasn't part of the Change, so it just was neither approved nor rejected - similar to other "big" changes that happen every Fedora release cycle which don't bother going through the Changes process ...)

fyi, I am planning to post a PR against f42, where it can be fixed as normal post-release update bringing back X support, if the maintainers don't object... I've just been swamped by other work.

I've opened a PR fixing this/adding X11 session support to gdm as https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdm/pull-request/28

I did recommend, very clearly, opening a FESCo ticket when this was proposed as a blocker bug: https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/blocker-review/issue/1849#comment-965070

...but nobody did, apparently.

Personally, I need X11 mainly for custom modeline support which doesn't have an equivalent in Wayland world. I did test F42 even before beta, but I hadn't noticed this initially because I haven't connected the affected laptop to an external monitor for a while. When I read about this in the mailing list, I tested the setup and found it broken. Perhaps the affected user base is small or perhaps you'll see backlash once F42 release hits the repos and people who install it start noticing. For me, it's a significant breakage, because I can't get full native resolution without a custom modeline in this setup under Wayland.

I don't think FESCo needs to get involved here. At this point, we have a PR for gdm and we should first see if that'll get merged. This would be the easiest solution, with the least amount of work for maintainers and with no disruption to users.

A gdm update with the revert is in Bodhi.
