This is just a temporary solution in the short term until we can get #75 resolved.

I don't think we want to maintain the pre-release-2017-10-04 branch. That was just supposed to be "here are the hacks done on 4 October 2017". Which is already past :-)

It should have just been a tag not a branch I suppose...

This can just go to master.

Yeah, I thought it might be good to put those hacks on one branch. I'll drop this one and reopen the one i closed.
