1) It could be rewritten to passes, so buildReferences (which are most likely to skip build) are run in multiCall
~~2) buildReferences's SQL has performance problems (LIMIT causes pg to use ultraslow plan)~~
3) It could be threaded

SQL performance moved to #1674
