#4 Select Ambassador representatives
Closed: Complete 7 years ago Opened 7 years ago by robyduck.

We have 8 candidates for two appointed seats in mindshare to fill, but probably the Ambassadors group is not able to appoint them with a clear and transparent process. We need to help them to find a proper way to get this done ASAP.
Candidates are here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mindshare/Representatives
Nick already has a seat and we actually don't have any contributor from APAC in Mindshare.

This issue should collect proposals or ideas about how we can make the selection happen. Using the voting app is an option, but we all know that this would be far away from getting appointed through a constructive discussion.
Any ideas are welcome, please add them here.

Given that we had divergent opinions on what had been asked for from Ambassadors previously in our meeting, I think the we should prepare a new request for Ambassadors to select representatives. I believe asking the regions to decide together is critical. This should hopefully get us a) reps who are committed and want to do this work and b) a dialog going between the regions which is critical to our future work.

Given the actual situation this is probably the best option, yes. I would also think, as we have still ambassador regions, and many ambassadors don't really know what Mindshare is about, we could nominate the representatives we think would do a good job (and perhaps were involved during the creation of this committee) and then start a votation.
Appointing them would work for the next cycle, when ambassadors have realized what we do and how they work under a new MIndshare umbrella.

Summary

Appointment / nomination model for new Ambassador candidates with criteria to consider their selection

Background

In the meeting, I was skeptical of making a hasty decision for how we select the candidates if the intent is to include them in the FAD. Transparency is critical in this process, from my POV. If interested, the community should easily understand how the Ambassador reps are included in the Mindshare Committee. This avoids any accidental FUD that could come by making a quick decision.

I felt an appointment / nomination model makes more sense because I believe Fedora's electoral governance model is subject to selection bias¹. I attended a talk by the OpenSUSE chairman, Distributions are not democracies – and that's okay (video), which gave me a lot to think about (and is influencing my thoughts here). I think using current context of the Mindshare Committee membership to select Ambassador reps is important, especially to ensure geographical coverage for international efforts (even if regions are going away, cultural and national groupings will not).

¹ I believe Fedora's elections are subject to selection bias because capable candidates do not always run for election or capable but somewhat invisible contributors face challenges to be elected.

Details

I'd like to discuss this as a FAD topic because I think it's important we try to do this "right" as we can from the outset.

I haven't had a chance to brainstorm ideas on what a selection / appointment model may look like for Mindshare. I want to research and explore what other communities are doing for similar things. Open source governance isn't anything new and I think we can learn a lot from other communities (and also keep this grounded and achievable in a short timeframe).

Action

Using an appointment / nomination model by Mindshare Committee to select Ambassador reps, but maybe save as discussion point for FAD?

Yes, that's the detailled version of what I had in mind. We should look (we know most them) out for ambassadors who would do a good job and could nominate them, thinking also of geographical coverage.
We can discuss this at the FAD, but are you sure we should make an appointment model? That seems critical to me, because Ambassadors should appoint them or? We should make sure the nominees all have the Mindshare skills (because they helped working on it, because they are involved actually or whatever), because launching Mindshare will be already a huge job.

Anyway, let's add more ideas here, I'll add this for sure to the FAD agenda and we will make it without ambassadors, although we have many reps already inside (me, you, bex, Eduard, Jared), so we will care about ambassadors for sure.

The ambassadors specific seats will be held by the FAMA members, nb and robyduck until the ambassadors program conversation ends and the program can select reps
