#623 Planning to sponsor 7 people into the packagers group
Closed: accepted by rjones. Opened by rjones.

This is not a normal package sponsors request as I will be the sponsor. However I'm filing a bug in case this request is improper and/or to make others aware of it.

For RISC-V we have up to 8 new Fedora packagers ready to get on board. They are:

David Abdurachmanov
@davidlt (already a packager, sponsored by me)

and:

FU Wei
@tekkamanninja

张松松(SongSong Zhang)
@u2fsdgvkx1

何政宇(Zhengyu He)
@hezhengyu

刘海滨(Haibin Liu)
@Milkice

张文宇 (Wenyu Zhang)
@imbearchild

赵佳盛(Jiasheng Zhao)
@jasenchao

LIU Yang
@liuyang

As noted above i'll sponsor them all into the packager group, if this is OK with everyone.

I should also say that to start with we are building into a separate Koji instance, of course as Koji does not support riscv64. We hope to build brand new Koji instance tied to FAS in the next few months. (adding @kevin)

I think that's fine. It would be nice to have the introduce themselves on fedora-devel, if they haven't already.

Yep. Big +1... of course they will need to be added as co-maintainers to push any changes, but thats fine. :)

Welcome everyone!

Umm. What? This is kind of a surprise. Honestly, I'm not sure I like this path, because these are not tied to specific packages and there is no evidence of interest in packaging things.

What are you planning to do to ensure that these folks are brought onboard properly into the Fedora packager community, @rjones?

So AIUI adding them to the packager group is not like PP, they won't be able to start pushing stuff into Fedora. It seems to me to be low risk. I am of course working to make sure they are being onboarded properly and understand the responsibilities of packaging.

In the bigger picture, they have been porting and packaging thousands of packages to RISC-V through one of the RISC-V Koji instances in China. And in fact are shipping the resulting Fedora distro in two(IIRC?) different hardware projects, one being the Pioneer Milk-V. They have a huge amount of packaging experience already, probably more than some existing Fedora packagers, it's not like we're talking about some random people.

To specifically answer the question though, the first step is going to be to get them to create pull requests (ie through src.fedoraproject.org) for local changes that they are currently maintaining in a separate dist-git repo downstream of Fedora. I want all of that stuff to be in Fedora dist-git (subject to review), and source changes to go upstream. That in itself is a very large project.

Okay, I'm satisfied. +1

This is done now. I have asked the new packagers to post introductions on Fedora devel.

I will try to keep an eye on them all, but if anyone spots any problems please email me.

You might want to tell them to target PRs at rawhide instead of f39. I already saw two of those for two Rust packages.

They should definitely be filing them against Rawhide. Could you add me (@rjones) to the problematic PRs, and any future ones too?
