At Flock, releng suggested that dots in package names should be allowed, but @pwalter pointed out that the packaging guidelines state the opposite.
Can FPC provide guidance?
If the question is "will a period ever occur in a package name", I can't see how the naming guidelines are remotely unclear. It lists the set of characters right at the top.

Use of periods in the version is perfectly valid and in fact encouraged to avoid ambiguity (between version 1.1 and verion 11, for example).

If the naming guidelines are unclear then I welcome suggestions for improvements.
Reading the referenced ticket, I see the suggestion that the dots will somehow break something, I'm not sure that's actually the case, but I'm sure we'd all like to hear about it. It would certainly be quite some surprise to me as I've used periods in package names for many years.

Was that the kind of clarification you were after? Is there anything else you need or would like the committee to discuss?
No input for 8 months, closing. I think guidelines are pretty clear.
