This is horrible UX. Can we please make it so that both URLs work in both cases? I have to stop and think every time I copy-paste or manually type the URL to a fork, which of the damned URLs I need to use this time...
Ping? Is there anything that can be done about this? I'm willing to try and contribute code myself if someone points me to the approximate area that would need to be changed :)
The thing is that the difference is because of how things are set-up on disk. We could try giving it a try in staging to see if we can fix things in the backend without breaking the UX.
