#2701 [WIP] Port (some) code to be py3 compatible

  • Make docker-compose setup use py3 code so that it becomes testable
  • Port some more code and tests to support Python 3

Some tests still fail on py 3, so more changes are coming, but feel free to review the changes.

It seems 'py3_work2' has some conflicts during merging, so I'm going to propose a merge against master then
